Am about ready to pack it in for the evening, so I'll check my e-mail tomorrow. I'm impressed and humbled by the jai dee of MrsJoe; too bad she wasn't able to meet MsBallsB -- but then maybe we both would be in trouble! Ha! ("Daveja, why you not e-mail Khun Joe yet??!!!")
BTW, I'll let you know if we hear anything about the Cambodia stuff we talked about.

Stephen Leather's 'Private Dancer' is interestingly written in the first person. This is a difficult style to write in successfully. What this style gives is that one is actually in conversation with the protagonists. Almost one is sitting at a bar hearing their stories. How true??
Well from mine and others experience I have to say to close for comfort. Fact IS stranger than fiction !

I can't comment as to the accuracy of "Private Dancer"... but I can say it was a very funny, thoroughly enjoyable read. More so because it's free 
I printed it from the .pdf file and let a few friends read it and they all enjoyed it too.

I found it distressing to read of the anguish the author was experiencing daily over the course of weeks and months. The lack of common understanding between the bar-girl and the main character was harsh to observe as the reader follows the gradual build-up to destruction of not only the relationship but also of a life. I felt so lucky not to be wearing his shoes. My heart goes out to those who have.
I felt repulsed by the character Big Dave, who made himself impervious to the vulnerabilities exhibited by the main, infatuated character. He regarded the bar-girls as "jizz receptacles", having once fallen in love with a bar-girl only to ultimately experience great emotional pain. I have never been out with a bar-girl, and I would rather not than end up with a frozen heart. I suppose "know thyself" is an apt bit of advice before diving into such a high-stakes "game".

There are other more sensible options than:
a) regarding BGs as sperm dumps, although some people on this forum might disagree
b) falling head over heels in "Love" with a girl who is only looking for a "walking ATM" and who regards one as an "it".
Those I regard as extremes. Finding a balance is certainly possible.
Certain (overly moralistic Canadian) novelists to contrary, most bar girls do not line up in the toilets at Thermae to slit their wrists, and most smitten sex tourists do not hang themselves from a pantry shelf (an easy end was hoped) like William Bloat.
People just get on with their lives.

Ah, chateaujade's distillative reasoning is ever refreshing. Those two extremes are equally rough: dumpster/it-ATM; then again, how different is that from how McDonalds customers/employees see each other? We all play roles to some degree, and hence have assumptions made of us as roleplayers.
Now if I can add a generous scoop of keep-your-head-screwed-on to the do-unto-others maxim that I aspire to follow daily, I think Bangkok will be a great experience.

Nonka, fair point... "funny" was I suppose on reflection a poor choice of words on my part to describe the story. I just found it a bit like "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" kinda thing, where even though you know it's sad and serious and tragic... you still laugh at the person's misforune.
