Hey all, I am considering leaving the US of A to go live in Thailand. I will be in between jobs for awhile, very soon, and I was thinking a 9 month to 1 year stay. Personally, I will be studying for certifications (Im a Network Admin) while Im in LOS but wanted to know if there were other ways of receiving a salary while in LOS? A friend of my wife's stated that he taught in BKK and met his wife at the UNI and he made a pretty good monthly salary but nothing to hold yourself up with. I do have about 25k saved but not hoping to use it all up. I just wanted to know if you locals believe that "teaching English" or working contract for fixing computers for a International (non-thai) company would be worth it or am I just dreaming? My wife is Thai and she has been in advertising in BKK and USA. But she wants to go back home to the family for awhile. What do you guys think?

There's plenty of information on working in LOS in this forum. You just need to search for it. But, briefly, it seems to me there are only four ways of making a living for a farang in LOS. They are: 1) Teaching English. Teachers correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand basic salaries around around 35k-50k a month, although some supplement this by doing private tuition levels. Is this enough to live on? Up to you. 2) Starting or buying your own business. Not easy I fear. But maybe a bar or something like that. 3) Working for multinational and arranging for them to transfer you over to LOS (my example). 4) Muddling along. Bit of work here, bit of work there, and effectively using the farang network. But you say you have US$25k saved. It sounds like your wife has resources. She certainly has a family there. You could probably spend 9 months in LOS and not work and eat into only half of that amoutnt if you were careful.
