There are some warnings in the newspapers in Europe about people who have been using their mobile phones in other countries while travelling and have got a very high bills from their phone companies for the so called roaming costs after they got back home. Because of all this I'm reluctant to take my mobile phone with me to BKK. I know it is very expensive to use hotells phone for international calls so what would people on this board recommend. What is the cheapest way of calling Europe from BKK?

This has been discussed many times before (local sim cards, unlocking your phone). Use the search engine or go to the 'tech section'.

This was a newbie question so no need for that f***ing smartass attitude!! DrLove- Actually I did a search for phone calls in the subject line but it didn't give any hit. I will have a look at 'tech section'.

******************************** dont be silly, you buy a Thai 1-2call SIM card and change over your SIM card, assuming your phone is unlocked. then instead of dialling 00 and the number you dial 009 and the number. this costs 10 baht a minute to europe. SIM card costs 900-1200 bahts depending on the number desirability. I have used it and it works ok, no problems and good reception. get the SIM card at MBK or any cellphone dealers

Also how long do sim cards last? A friend who just returned from bkk said that they only last a couple of months, I was hoping to use the same sim card for each time I visited bkk..

It varies. Search for the following phrase in the Tech section: 1-2-call or DTAC It will answer all your questions and more.

************************************* SIM card lasts as long as you keep topping it up. the more you top up, the longer the life of the sim card. so before you go home give it a big topup so its live when you come back.
