Is it just me or does anyone else constantly struggle for small change? Every time I pass a 7-Eleven I have to pop in with my 1000bht note for a pack of gum. Is it possible to walk into a bank and ask 20bht notes? I don't have a Thai bank account, but my gf does. Thanks.

I had this problem on my first two trips, but on my last visit I just made sure to pull more cash from the ATM at longer intervals and pay with the largest note that each seller would take. Even a 20B entrance fee at some wat can often be paid with the bill of your choosing. Restaurants usually take whatever you have as do bars and shops. I lost a few baht by rarely carrying coins, but it was worth it to me to avoid the endless jingle. Only taxis and other transports come to mind as having a consisten problem with large bills. Other than that it's just a matter of how much granularity you want when and if you tip.

JackRabbit present... It's also a matter of security to have small notes with You. I F ( and that is a big if) some punk notices You flipping a 1000 for a pack of cigs, he might mistakenly use YOU as ATM. I am careful to keep them ready when coming to LOS because a) I do not like to flash cash and b) it helps to avoid all "solly, no small money..." hassles. JR

last time living in bkk had a regular bank that I got change from every week in my old neighbourhood of The Wet.. even after I 'moved on up' to the other side of town I still came once a week, (to visit friends and exercise + shoot the shit at the youth center etc.) they got to know me at bank and I usually delt with 2 of the respective 'tellers'... I would get 10000 bht out of the atm and then break it down to 20's 50's... I always like to have lots of 20's and 50's stored up in my apartment so I can just grab a random handfull here and there for pocket change... I would also always bring my gym backpack which was needed to mule all the 20's and 50's home on the bus.

For whatever it's worth brothers, try this; 1) Thousand baht notes on top, followed by five hundreds, one hundreds, fiftys, and twentys. 2) Now fold the stack with the twentys on top, decending to the thousand notes on the bottom. 3) Loose change in pocket, and you wont go wrong. 4) 10 baht coin, (in Pattaya) for baht bus at ready upon exiting. 5) plenty of twenty baht notes for tipping BG's, (I know, I'm a cheap charlie!). I usually carry around 10,000 baht for the nights out, and empty the billcup regularly, checking or paying the bill as it arrives. I pay the hotel daily, so their is no confusion over the mini-bar charges, whatever. And ALWAYS lock up the passport and big money, and air tickets.
