When you are in a bar they allow you to run a tab all night. When you order a drink they will put a small cup in front of you and put your bill in it each time they serve you or your BG a drink.
I always make a point of checking the amount of the bill as soon as the service girl puts it in. I do it in front of her and I also check when she brings the first lady drink. During the evening I will also continue to check every so often. If there's a problem I can correct it on the spot. I do this in every bar I go into including the bars I consider my local. Saves a lot of hassles.
When it comes time to pay and I start to hand her 1000 baht. I tell her 1000 and I don't release the bill from my death grip  until she tells me 1000. I rarely have a problem.

To add to what BigDUSA said, if I am in a bar for a while and I start to collect quite a few bills, I will at times settle up the bill and then continue to drink. That way, I clear the cup of all bills and won't have to worry about a stray bill ending up in there. It is much easier to keep track of three bills three times at a bar rather than nine bills all at one time. I especially like to clear the cup if I am feeling generous and buying rounds for people.

Both good routines to follow at all times.
My bodyguards always check my tab, and have at times had it changed in favor of Thai prices as apposed to falang prices. They do this because I always check. They check it now for me, and show me that it is right, or they get it fixed if it is wrong, then show me it is right.
But, they know that if it is wrong when I look they will lose face, and that's not good.

BiGD and oldarmy are right, don't let the tab run indefinitely as you may well be pissed by settling up time.
Always a good idea to make sure they unnastan what size bill you are paying with.
Another tactic is to make a mark or initial each bill as it comes.
Who cares what they think, they will know you're not a sucker.
If I'm in a ST joint I always settle up the BF and drinks bill before I head to the room. The "tip" is between me and the girl in the room, never in public.

And if in the freelancer bar, or tonys, get a f***en lid for the cup, and bring a vomit bag ( for the cheap whiskey substute) That they will serve you up.. Otherwise go elsewhere and have fun.

I know that Exotica in NEP is notorious for padding the check-bins. They dont add extra drinks to your slip, they add extra slips to your check-bin. Even after having being busted many times, the wait staff continue to do it over and over.

So the question...
Should I let my check bin run all night and never watch it? Should I check the bill when it arrives? Should I check the LD prices? Should I continue to check it every so often? AND when handing over a B1000 should I tell her its a B1000?
