On my next trip I would like to improve my thai language skills and I do think Pattaya is a good place for this. I enquired at the school located in Soi 6/1. The chap at the desk (the manager?) stressed that all his ladies (his teachers) - had a diploma and were fully qualified. Actually I favour to hire one privately but have no clue where to find one and how much to pay per hour. She should have a reasonable amount of English skills at least and I do not think the beer bars are the places to look for this kind of person. Can anyone help or has experiences with language schools in Pattaya at all? Thanks for your help.

So I can answer my question now. There are a number of language schools in Pattaya. I decided to go for one in Soi 6/1 (at the back of Mandarin club) because of its vicinity to Beach Road. Before I checked some Beer Bars for a freelance teaching-talent but my impression was, that this makes no sense if you seriously want to learn the language. I took a first 20 hours course on a one-to-one basis for 7000 Baht. Books were supplied. The course is made up of three sections, each having 20 hours (after 60 hours you should be able to speak, understand, read and write basic Thai.... well, that is what the manager told me!) My teacher was a 30 yrs. old Thai lady with a degree from a Bangkok private Uni - a funny and open minded person who boosted my speaking ability through her continous asking questions. There are 3 rooms, the entrance and office in the middle and the two classrooms to the left and right. Each classroom is divided into two sections for the lessons to take place (a bit like the cubicles in the oil massage parlors). It seemed to me that business is evenly divided into falangs learning Thai and girls learning English and German. First I was a bit embarrased that the manager changed my schedule from 10 days a 2 hours to 4 days of 4 hours and 2 days of two hours (reason was that school was closed for Songkran). Actually 4 hours gave me the right input to learn quickly and a lot ( I was able to speak a little bit before). By cutting down on drinking I was able to manage going out and being at school at 10 in the morning. Unfortunately I had to reduce my activities to ST only as it would have been a bit of a hazzle to get out the girl early in the morning. There have also been computer classes - the clientele were mostly girls learning about eMail features (but MS-Office was also on schedule).

I have searched for schools offering Thai Language courses in the U.S. After realizing this was not going to happen I just started asking around. At a rather large wholesale club there was a very attractive young lady who I believed to be Thai. I approached her about her country of origin and discovered she was from Laos. I explained my interest in learning Thai and some of her friends are Thai and I left my phone number with her. That same day received a call from a farang who is married to a wonderful Thai lady. They have adopted me into their family and are willing to teach me Thai once a week. The farang is 62 and his wife 55. They are amazing. He met her in America after her first husband had passed away. On his first trip to Thailand she would drop him off at the temples and pick him up at the end of the day. He had no choice but to work at learning Thai while at the temple. Also, I understand that you can take language courses at the temples in the U.S. which is a good way to meet people and learn the language for free. Might be worth a visit to keep your new found language skills fresh. LS

For any of you planning on improving your thai in london before your next trip to LOS, I can certainly recommend SOAS. Did a thai beginners course with them last year before heading out to LOS and it was great fun. Our teacher was a lady from Chiang Mai called Lek ( who was writing her thesis on Erotic Literature!) who knew how to teach & as all thais have, had a great sense of sanook! The course lasts 4 weeks - 2 evenings a week & saturdays and costs just £400. SOAS is part of University of London and the class is taught at the Russell Sq campus. I also met some good people on the course who I still stay in touch with so all in all a win win situation!
