I know these sorts of points have been raised many times before but Ill again add a few tips to get newbies going based upon my more recent observations of the nightlife in Thailand:
1. Nanaplaza go-gos have a fine selection of girls but the drinks prices here are very high at around 120-150 baht a drink. Personally, the go-gos here are not worth paying those prices for. Many of the girls in the go-gos are looking for several short times in one night rather than the more enjoyable long time. Long gone are the days of nanaplaza being worthy of a visit. The place is now absoluely full of ice queens who spend most of their time staring at their own reflections in the mirror. Most girls prefer short time over long time. If you really do like the look of a girl in a Nana go-go, take your chance and wait until 1am when she leaves work at Big Dogs or golden (very attractively priced drinks) and pick her up then. (Cheap charlie tip but very needed at NEP)
2. Soi Cowboy has some very good happy hours. Notably Dollhouse at 30 baht per drink between 7:30 and 8:30pm. However..becuase it is one of the few go-gos in Bangkok offering such cheap drinks it inevitable gets overly busy and the results is that the girls do very good trade, get popular, develop big heads, turn into ice queens and end up seeking out the multiple short times or punters which they know they can milk a lot of money out of. They are not beggars and they can be choosey! Current drinks prices here range from around 70 to 100 baht.
3. Give patpong a try. The bars and go-gos here seem to have resisted the temptation to increase drinks prices. There are new, pretty young girls arriving here all the time and despite it sometimes being a letdown at least you can leave with some money in your pocket which is more than can be said for nanaplaza. Do your research on the go-gos first as they range from complete rip off bars to some of the best in Bangkok (whcih doesnt say much anymore). Expect to pay similar prices to Soi Cowboy.
4. Outside of Bangkok, Samui's bar girl scene and go-go scene is appallingly bad. I would not even venture a look at this during my stay in Samui any more. Overprices drinks, overugly girls. Waste of any newbie or veterans time.
5. Outside of Bangkok, Pattaya has some very attractive drinks promotions on at its many go-go bars. Be very careful however of the 45baht per draft of beer. Ensure that when you order your drink that you ask for a heineken DRAFT! and not just say heiniken for example as you will be brought a bottle of heiniken instead of the DRAFT and will be charges 100baht instead of the draft price of 45 baht.
6. When entering go-go bars...DO NOT be afraid to ask to look at the drinks prices first and survey the girls on stage. This IS permitted and you are more than entitled to leave through the entrance which you came in just as quickly as when you entered. Dont bother getting legless and penniless because you feel obliged to order a drink having entered a bar or if the mamasan or papasan is giving you the hard sell or evil eyes.
7. Dont buy a girl a drink straight away. Chat to her first for at least 3-5 minutes to establish if she is trying to milk you for money or is interested in having a good time with you. Resist those pretty eyes and the crotch rubbing. This is probably the most difficult point to adhere to.
8. Try the many beer gardens or pool halls during the afternoon or along the eateries that appear along sukhumvit road as you will most likely be rewarded with a girl far more worthy of any go-go girl.
9. Any farang couples wishing to have some pointers for a good threesome or moresome experience with some thai girls let me know as I can point you to the go-gos/bars which my gf and I have found to be very welcoming to this.
Note that Thailands nightlife is always changing (almost on a monthly basis) so I would estimate that some of these tips would probably expire in around a months time.

Well done. I am, however, a bit curious as to which of the Patpong Bars are not rip offs. Must admit that I have not been there for many years. You might say I payed heavily for an education, and never felt the need to repeat the experience.

Most of the kings group go-gos seem to not rip you off. A quick search on the forum for patpong go-go will bring up board members opinions on the good from the bad. Admittedly though, Bangkoks go-go scene has gone from okay to bad to very bad over recent years.

I never have a RIP off and now Patpong has Spy cams all over the place in Patpong. To bad they are not in the go go bars. If you feel scamed (the price was not the same that they told you or the girl took a drink on you with out telling you) go straight out from the bar down to main silom there is a CAM there as well as a Tourist Police buss you will see the scam a go go will be very nice to you. I been to the Kings on the right hand side comming from silom more times then I can count and they never scammed me or my friends.

I am not worried by the price of drinks just expressing an opinion that the drinks at Big Dogs are not attractively priced. As for the women, why worry, you just take your chances like everybody else. It will either be a good or bad experience. If it is good all the better

I worry more about the disparity in pricing between bars and am constantly surprised by the willingness of people to be extorted for drinks at silly prices (which seems to be happening in particular in Bangkok comapred to Pattaya and Phuket). Why drink in one bar full of ice queens where drinks are 140 baht a drink if you can drink in another bar full of ice queens where the drinks are 30 baht per drink? By doing your research you can end up with more money to spend on your girls (so you can maybe have 3 short time instead of 2 for example) and you dont end up fuelling the drinks extortion in the process. Im even prepared to pay over the odds for my drinks if the girls are proportionately different in quality to the lower priced bar but even this does not seem to be the case with abrs full of uglies still charging 140 baht a drink in NEP!

Kings and Queens group is honest and prices are fair but the girls are very pushy. If you can resist the buy LD drinks then it can be cheaper but if you don't it can cost you just as much as Nana or Soi Cowboy.
Some cute lookers in those bars but found it a bit hard (no pun intended) sitting beside farang couples doing the tourist thing by going into the famous Patpong while I was pussy hunting.

PS Kings Corner is a mix of LB's and Thai girls. Two groups of guys I talked to had no idea until I told them.
