Hey bros,

Dont generally speaking consider myself a "newbie" per se but this question sounds like it may well be one that falls into this general category.

I am well aware of the idea of Mia Nois...I know it is a Minor Wife...or what we would refer to in the West as a mistress that you take care of.

I am seeking more info....a bit more of a fully rounded fleshed out understanding. If you are going so far as to call her a Mia (wife) does this imply taking care for life? Is there an understanding that if she is declared as such that she "Should" be more than just the "whore of the month" and that there is an implied commitment??

If it is not a long term agreement to take care of her then why the "Mia" term?

As with many things in LOS and Asia in general I suspect that there is the implied agreement but it is frequently not honored by the self centered man.

Any info on this by experienced bros would be appreciated.

Well, Mia Noi is mistress as you said. Once I had a lightheart discussion with a taiwanese actress. She told me a ideal mia noi should have the following characteristic.

1) Able to pamper the man when he is tired
2) Able to satisfy a man in bed
3) Most importantly, Able to keep a secret, LOL

Mia noi culture is well "accepted" in asian woman. They are woman in all class of life that are mia nois. There are some superstar actress, model, ect... in taiwan, china, hong kong, and thailand who are known to be mia nois. When a girl is your mia noi, it is implied you will be taking care of her as long as she is your mia noi. Her job is to be at your beckon call and able to be to take care of you at moments notice. And more importantly, she is NOT suppose to bother and pester you in normal daily life. That mean, no call to your mobile, home, office etc.... And Do not ask any questions (well, this one is hard to do)

I know man both chinese and khun thai who have multiple Mia nois. The most one I know personally, is actually a khun thai, he have about 15-16 mia noi. But he only have child with the #1,2,3 mia noi, he does not want any child with rest of mia noi.

There is mia shoo as well.......

Always makes me laugh when you hear guys go on about their 'mia noi', some sort of trophy, when she's actually just a Nana Plaza bar girl who is still working and essentially all they are is a regular customer.

That is a Mia Gep...at best...but really, just a bar girl.

Not really sure there are gradings as such, some of them are just different things.

Should you choose to partake and have one beware that many/most Mia Nois will be bucking to either become the Mia Luang or have all the financial and emotional benefits of one. They will want more. It is just human nature.

I see no reason for a farang to have one since there are so many Mia Geps/BarGogoSoapie girls around.

I think for Thai men it is a real status symbol. A bit like the mistress and/or 2nd and 3rd home in the west.

bkkfella,
I know only one farang with mia noi per the above.
This is a very good relationship for both 'on paper', but every so often his Mia Noi will engineer a situation and try to force choice between her & Mia Luang. Only money/gifts (on both sides) manage to settle things down.
Frankly I couldn't handle the stress, even if I had his money & situation.
Cheers,
Liam

I dunno if you are aware but the concept of 'mia noi' in Thailand has changed over the last 30 years as western values have begun to infiltrate this country.

Originally it was the job of the wife to go out and find a 'mia noi' for her husband so that he could vent his excess sexual energy on her. As it was arranged that way the wife always had the financial arrangement with what was usually a much lower class girl. Given this arrangement most Thai guys were happy to stick with their wives but shag around with their newer brighter model. I kind of like this idea of family values.

Coincidentally, there was a story in yesterday's The Nation about the former strongman General Sarit, telling of his 171 concubines [along with the one wife]. Reading it made me see just how true it is that it really is 'all about the money' for these women- as long as they get theirs anything is possible.
<snip>
His women counted 171, and that doesn’t include all the one-night stands. His taste ranked from beauty queens and actresses to students. They all received a diamond ring, a house, a car and cash as gifts for agreeing to “meet” with Sarit.

A question of leadership: was it contrived, or real?

Few Thais can probably name the country’s 23 prime ministers since the shift from absolute monarchy to democracy in 1932, but one name many are unlikely to miss is Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat (1959-1963).

Love him or hate him, most people associated Sarit’s name with an authoritarian style and a leader who tamed all sectors of society with muscles and bullets. His government established a style of control that was memorable.

His personal taste for cleanliness and orderliness was applied as social policy – hooligans were rounded up, prostitution brought under control and overall crime reduced.

People in their 60s today still talk about Sarit’s draconian suppression of arsonists, having them publicly executed on the spot of their very crime without trial.

He had neither opponents nor critics – they were all thrown in jail.

But the impression that Sarit worked hard to stay on top of everything could be just fictional, asserted Chulalongkorn University’s historian Suthachai Yimpresert. Sarit might have been a smart politician who knew how and when to create a good public image.

“Whenever a fire broke out in the city, you would see Sarit holding a hose at the scene,” said Suthachai. “But when reading official reports of Cabinet meetings, we find Sarit took a small part in running his office. Normally, he just said something to open the meeting and passed the job to his deputies – Thanom and Prince Wan.”

The historian believes it was General Thanom Kittikachorn and Prince Wan Waitayakorn, then Sarit’s deputy prime ministers, who kept the government running on a day-to-day basis.

“It was not Sarit’s style to pay attention to daily administration,” Suthachai said. “More importantly, he had as many as 171 concubines. He was probably pretty busy with them around.”

On the contrary, argued Thammasat University’s political scientist Prachak Kongkirati, the fact that Sarit did not have to toil, but still managed to stay on top of everybody, could reflect that he was indeed a strong leader.

“He made people work for him,” said Prachak. “Doesn’t this mean he was a capable leader?”

Suthaichai agreed, but insisted that the creation of positive image for Sarit emanated from a conscious effort. Sarit’s public image in the mid-1960s, years after his death, and a decade later were quite different, said Suthachai. To Suthachai, Sarit’s image as a strong, capable and decisive leader was a reconstruction in the mid-1970s by the conservatives, including those in the military. They consider it was part of the conservatives’ efforts to fight back against the students who led the October 14, 1973 pro-democracy uprising, which toppled decades of rule under dictatorial military regimes.

Sarit’s image after he succumbed to illness as sitting prime minister was that of a brutal dictator, a corrupted man, and a polygamist. Notorious court battles between his wife Thanpuying Vichitra Thanarat and sons from a previous marriage prompted investigation into his assets by the government of Sarit’s successor, Field Marshal Thanom.

Thanom was Sarit’s aide, and was promoted as the new prime minister.

But to respond to public pressure as well as to demonstrate his departure from Sarit’s increasingly tarnished image, Thanom eventually confiscated Bt604 million from the total Bt2.8 billion of assets from the strongman’s families. The amount was equivalent to 25 per cent of the national budget – worth US$11 billion (now Bt455 billion) annually at that time.

Sarit accumulated wealth from the government lottery office and financial aid from the US government to help Thailand fight communism, said Suthachai.

The wealth enabled Sarit to obtain and entertain all of his women, the historian observed. His women counted 171, and that doesn’t include all the one-night stands.

His taste ranked from beauty queens and actresses to students. They all received a diamond ring, a house, a car and cash as gifts for agreeing to “meet” with Sarit.

October 14 demolished decades of military control of politics, society loosened up and different interest groups started their demands for a better life. Street protests by peasants, labour unions and students occurred on an almost daily basis.

“Those who remained in the military yearned for the time of their power and tried to provoke the conservatives in society to stand up against the students. Sarit was used as a symbol of the time of orderliness.

Military-owned radio stations cleaned up Sarit’s image and promoted a revitalisation of his authoritarian ruling style.”

Three years later, on October 6, 1976, a massacre of student activists occurred at Thammasat University, orchestrated by right-wing groups.
