go to the bar speak english and listen in thai, far more entertaining, you see for you to know thai the first thing a bg thinks is he has a thai wife.
you will hear "rue mark" knows too much,
if one can speak fluent thai then you know the scene, the games, the sick buffalo story.
they don't want that they want the newbie in town they can spin a sorry story and reap the rewards,
not the wise one who will pay the going price have fun and move on.
anyway "up to you" could'nt resist.

some girls do not like punters who speak thai at all - because they are harder too fool. a good one is to say that it is your first time in bkk and your 2nd night...
some girls actually like it alot, they know that you know the ropes and it is easier for some to chit-chat in their mother tongue...

The problem I found with speaking a "little" thai, is that the better I get at my few phrases, people start answering me in thai, and I immediately have to protest that I do not speak thai. So they have to start over in English -- I mean usually they smile, but it does make me wonder why I'm doing it, I guess for the fun of learning thai, but certainly not yet enough for real communication. So if you say "Doa Rai?" and they answer "Sip song baht," you need to know what that means too.
Once in a Hong Kong restaurant I tried to order in Chinese, and the waiter said "Sir, I did not work my way through college learning English to stand here and try to figure out what you're trying to say, so please order in English." We both had a good laugh at that one.
I'm sticking to English now.
