howdy,
arranging a trip to BKK with a friend that's only been out of his home state three times, never been out of the country, and is recently divorced - which is why I had to mention the incredibly uplifting high it is to be a tourist in thailand. *laugh*
anyway, i'm not just looking for clubs or massage parlor recommendations, but actual cool touristy things to do and see.
i'm looking for personal experiences that you've had and would recommend to any other forum brother to go do or see.

Oh gee.....where to begin!
Myrth - there's no shortage of things to do in while in Bangkok. It would be a bit helpful if you could provide specific points of interest; are you folks into cultural stuff (e.g. temples), shopping, etc.?
I would recommend the following (the list is by no means exhaustive) :
- major attractions: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Saket, Vimanmek Palace (they have a traditional Thai dance show twice a day, if memory serves me right, which I found interesting), etc. The Grand Palace is an absolute must. A traditional Thai massage at the massage school on the Wat Pho grounds is an interesting experience - try it at least once.
- Another interesting experience is the Muay Thai (Thai boxing). I went to the Lumphini stadium; matches are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Personally, I got bored after two hours, but you might want to consider it if that's your cup of tea.
- If you're into museums, there's the National Museum and the Royal Barges museum.
- Sitting in the Lumphini Park and watching the scenery while sipping on my Singha was another interesting experience.
- Shopping: there's lots of that in BKK at good prices, but this isn't one of my strong points, so perhaps others can weigh in if you're at all interested.
- Consider day trips outside of the city (e.g. Ayuthaya, Kwai Bridge, Floating Markets, etc.)

Golden Star had some excellent suggestions. The opportunities in and around BKK are limitless - it mostly depends on how much time, energy and money you want to devote to touristy stuff as opposed to partying and mongering.
If you prefer a structured approach, take a look at http://tour.sawadee.com. Many possibilities there. Or if you hook up with a TG, especially a L/T FLer, she'll be happen to show you all the sights. She'll know them better than most professional guides do.
I don't know how touristy it is, but I found it very rewarding to take lessons in Thai cooking. I began with the introductory course that the Landmark Hotel offers, then went on to take more lessons at an institute. It's a souvenir of Thailand that has served me well!

Take each skytrain line from one end to the other. Get off on random stops (or, each stop), and explore a couple of blocks around each.
On nut was fun, with te Tesco Lotus next to it ( dig shopping), and a Moo Ka Ta a bit next to it..
Check out the various domestic airlines, and pick a destination at random for a daytrip.
Go to the ancient capital of Ayudayah. See the floating markets.
Lose yourself for an entire day in MBK.
Lots to see, and lots to do.

Many good recommendations here.
I want to share my experience of bringing a newbie in similar poition to BKK.
First Night: My regular TBG introduces very nice (hand picked by her) TBG to my newbie. I check her out, am happy & commence proceedings with mine. A sweet looking but very aggressive FL moves in on my newbie & 'bounces' the the hand picked girl.
Next Morning: My newbie brings aggressive FL to breakfast. Thereafter she sticks to us like glue two days.
Day 3: I tell my newbie I am booking for two days in Pattaya as was our plan. He tell me he wants to stay in BKK. I ask why, and he gives me some bullshit about relaxing on holiday. I tell him I know he's pussy whipped & he must escape. I insist, so he says he wants to take the aggressive FL. I tell him no way, this is a boys adventure trip, & I don't want baggage. He relents.
Day 4/5: On the way to Pattaya the calls start. They go on for two days, completely f***ing his mind. He shuns P4P & I feel like I am alone there - not to worry, I did find some play mates. I confiscate phone - he wants to biff me. I give it back warning about global roaming bills (which turned out to be several hunderd dollars.
Day 6 till 10: Return BKK. Aggressive FL re-attaches herself to newbie. Tells newbie, my TG "talk about her bad", my girl "no good", she "too old, too mean", "have nice friend for your friend". Agressive FL tells my TG I go with her friend (BTW my TG ok with butterfly in most ciecumsatances). My TG cries, begs me not to bring agressive FL's friend in bar because she will lose face.
I speak to newbie, we fall out & spend rest of tour in different directions. My TG is "very very wollied, very very concerned your friend".
Thereafter: Newbie becomes instant expert on LOS. Visits many times. Eventually brings agrressive FL home, plans to marry.
This is after more sick buffalo stories and more dollars than you can imagine.
This is all still in play, but I worry a lot about my friend who is clearly buying a lot of trouble, has burned up a lot of money, and may well end up poor & lonely.
Maybe I'm wrong - who knows?
As they say we are "not our brother's keeper" but watch your friend's company closely & make some pre tour commitments to each other about what you will do in certain circumsatnces. This may well help avoid f***ing up a great bys adventure.
BTW, enjoy the temples. LOL

WOW Thaksin finally moved the border and the Ankor Wat to Bangkok I knew it belonged to Thailand all along. But do not tell the Kmer we might have another border closure and no more fast visas.
