This is gonna sound a real dumb question but... how easy is it to cross the Sukumvit road? I'm gonna be staying at the Majestic Suites and want to visit the Eden club which I understand is within easy walking distance of the hotel, but on the other side of the road. I've heard tales that suggest crossing the road is akin to commiting suicide, though from my expericences of BKK, most main roads are easy to cross cos there is so much traffic around the cars are hardly moving. Anyway, do they have bridges over the road or do you just put your faith in whatever god you worship and hope for the best? Have to say my preferred mode of transport in BKK is the Tuk-Tuk. Love em!

Don't worry about it, we have all asked our fair share of "dumb questions"

Most places along Sukhumvit you cannot J-walk because of a fence in the middle, if you cross at a corner do what I do and wait for other people to jump out into traffic and then follow them, or just use one of the pedestrian or sky-train over-passes. It is VERY EASY to cross.

Have fun at EDEN

The guy staying at the Grace Hotel crossed Sukhumvit because he had his dick stuck in a chicken.

(I adapted that one from a Bruce Willis film.)

Amberkane,

Like Ccvvbb said, you can't cross at most places on Sukhumvit because of the fence in the middle of the road, so the issue of "crazy traffic" becomes irrelevant, as you'd either have to use the pedestrian crossings (like the one at Sukhumvit and Soi 4 where the NEP is), or one of the overpasses.

It's indeed a very painless experience so you're worrying over nothing, my friend.

there are damn few traffic lights near the Majestic.. and the one at soi 3/4 is dangerous even when the light is with you..

Best is to use the flyovers, but you can also go up to near soi 8, take the escalator up to BTS (Nana station), cross over and then take the stairs down, you come out right at the corner where the Subway sandwich is, have a bit to eat as you will need the energy once you walk the half block to Eden..

There's something to watch for on the crossing of Suk near the MS, which you will do often - easier than clambering up those bloody pedestrian bridges. If you are crossing South to North (MS on S. side) all westbound traffic is stopped periodically by the traffic lights - that gets you to the central reservation with the green man. However, although all Eastbound traffic is stopped at the same time, Southbound traffic fron Nana Nua (Soi3) turning left onto Suk. is not stopped by lights, although they should give way to crossing pedestrians. Of course TIT, so they push as hard as they can to pass but usually give way to peds, you just have to use your nerve. Motorcycles will pass either side of you on the second stage of the crossing. Stand and watch the crowds crossing for a few cycles and you will see, just keep an eye out for the left-turning traffic from your left. There is usually a cop on the junction, as the police box is situated on the SE corner, so traffic is slightly better behaved than elsewhere.

Finally, while waiting to cross watch out for buses and lorries - there have been reports of people on the kerb-edge getting whacked by wing mirrors 8^)

Also beware that on Suk there can the traffic flow in both directions on both sides of the central reservation -that makes jaywalking an interesting experience.

There is a traffic light on the left hand side of the Majestic suite entrance, near the police post. Just come out of the entrance, turn left and within 20 paces, you should be able to see the traffic light. There you can cross the road, then turn right to walk toward soi 7 to Eden.

Bkk sexy dot com... FYI, from Bangkok Taxi drivers handbook - section pertaining to traffic lights ;
Green - MUST GO at all costs.
Amber - GO
Red - Go if you think you can get away with it.
Mind you, with the "Rot-tit' - its usually not to difficult to cross sukhumvit, as traffic is at a standstill, its just those bloody motorcylists that sneak up on you !
