I am not a newbie, but I nevertheless have a question.
I was often disappointed by the 'performance' of bar girls (BG). I have heard that a good way of avoiding disappointment is to ask the mamasan for her opinion or advice.
Is that true? Will the mamasan not simply point out her favourites, or girls who have difficulty getting a LT or ST?
Anyway, how would she know who is good/bad/enthusiastic/lazy?!

Well there are 3 basic types of mama/papasan.
One is there for the girls, the other is there for the customer, the last is there for themselves.
Guess which is the biggest group. 
In a normal (western) business sence one type needs to be the other types also. But how many thais can be accused of a "normal business sence"????
I haven't seen much bullshitting by mamasans, but then again I'm more of a freelancer type.
And how do they know? Simple, many (most?) girls are tested by testpilots. Dirty Guru is one (and he is not alone), many papasans will sample the merchandise (maybe regulair). And ofcourse the BG grapevine. During dull hours the girls are ofcourse talking about YOU. That is probably the best way for a mamasan to know who does what, and why not.
I think you will find more testpilots on the high-end of the market. I don't think there are many in the beergardens, that seem to be run mostly by women. But that is just a feeling I have, combined with some economics.
DG : Can you make a good living by being "testpilot"??? I'm still looking for a good paying job that I can do while I live in LOS.

As always the dollar ( Baht ) rules in Thailand. Find a place with many nice looking gals,, see mamasan, tell her your "wishes" likes/dislikes give her 500BHT tip first time. Make it clear you will be returning and her help on selection in obtaining your pleasures is important!!!!!
From there if she gets you what you want tip can drop to 200 per time and all is SWEET as honey in the morning.

There is only one type of mamsan.
They are there to make money for the bar.
This usually means keeping the customer happy, unless he's causing trouble.

I think there are many misconceptions about the papasans and mamasans. I often ask the girls about work conditions and their relations to management. Firstly, it is not common that the girls give the mamsan kickbacks for her having recommended her to a customer. I have only came across this practice once. Secondly, their job is not to recommend the "best" girl, but to make sure that the work is evenly distributed and all girls get customers. The "best" girls get customers anyway, so they have to recommend the less attractive providers to make sure that they get a share of the cake, Whether you tip the papasan makes no difference. They have their loyalty with the owner and not with the customers. To keep the girls happy and make sure there are no fights between them is priority number one. Also, there are no freebies for the papasan or the owner. The girls demand payment also from them if they want sex. At least that is what the girls say.

There has got to be a test drive in order to sample the wares. A burger chef wouldn't hawk burgers without sampling the goods. So why would a pussy merchant put pussy on the shelf without getting so much as a look n feel.

I tend to go to the same bars when I'm in LOS and get to know the mamasan. I buy her a drink every now and then. I tell her what I'm looking for and they have been very good in steering me in the right direction. I've also been the first farang for a few new BG fresh off the bus. Guess what, generally speaking they are a lousy lay. They haven't got the 'act' down. When I come back a few months late boy o boy have they learned more then a few tricks.
