Hi, I'm new to the forum, been reading things for a while now and am thinking of going to Thailand for a couple of weeks in late march, I'm 25, but I have a few questions: 1. I'll be going on my own, is there anything I should be looking out for apart from obvious things like pick pockets, lady boys, otrher common sense things etc.... 2. Is this a good/bad time of year to go to Thailand or does it really not make any difference? 3. The way this website talks about the Girls in Thailand its like they're all prostitutes - lol - are there any local girls up for a bit of action that isn't paid for? Not that I have a problem with paying for it!!!! 4. Whats the exchange rate? Thanks!!!

1. Pick pockets are not a big problem in my experience, but if you carry your wallet in your back pocket, then button it up. Most of the pick pockets are lady boys (katoeys). The other thing to ignore are touts, who try and befriend you and take you to shops or massage parlours where they get a commision (same with taxi drivers). 2. Late March is OK, but it starts getting really hot in April and May. 3. Yes, if you want to hang out in clubs or big shopping malls (same place girls back home hang out). But since you don't speak any Thai, and you will only be there 2 weeks, it may be a bit harder. The line between prostitution and dating is not quite as clear cut as it is in West (in the West there are more formal ways that girlfriends and wifes get paid for sex). 4. You didn't say what currency. It changes every day. Use google and you can find many sites with exchange rate calculators.

Thanks Mr Alan, I guess I never thought of the "paid for sex thing" haha - different worlds eh? I'll check the rate, thanks for that - silly question really. I'm not worried about hot weather, I'd rather it be cooler tobe honest - I live in Tenerife so as you'd imagine I get my fair share of sun here.

Hey Loaded, Mr. Alan gave you some good advice. 1) Remember, as a tourist you are a target for every guy looking to make a buck. Touts are not to be trusted at all costs. They are mostly vermin and imho more trouble than they are worth. Make sure you take taxis and tell them to turn the meter on before you close the door. If someone is very friendly to you on the street they are about to try to get you to go to a soapie or some place where they can get a commision. Don't talk to them. Walk away. Never had a problem with pick pockets or any overt crime. 2) There really isn't a bad time to go. I spent the entire summer there through the rainy season and still had a great time. 3) If you are there for only 2 weeks don't bother setting your sights on pick-ups at the local mall. If it happens great, if not great. 4) Changes daily and even if it bottomed out the day before your flight are you going to cancel your plans? Didn't think so. Have fun and wear a helmet.

The advice is read all the posts that you are interested in - you can find them in various categories - Oil, Soapy, night entertainment etc. You will get a lot of information and by then, you will know where to find the fun. Time is short - day pass like min - cos everyone is enjoying it. It's a 24 hour game. Remember to post your report on return or whilst there - internet cafe are all over.

To paraphrase Loaded:
Hi, I'm not new to the forum, been reading things for a Long while now and am thinking of going to Thailand for one of week in late march, I'm way over 25, but I have a few questions:
Perfect evening, have my chosen BFN (bride for the night) accompany me to a bar, where we can enjoy live music (anything but hip hop) Dinner, then retire to my hotel/serviced Apt. 1. Bars with decent bands? (not to pull, but to go to.) 2. In BFN´s (brides for the night) I value quality service over and above all else. I will do the soapy for my 21yo fantasy bit. Any particular suggestions for places where the ladies are perhaps mostly over 25 and, how to say this, calmer? Obviously, I am talking exclusively LT here. 3. Any other suggestions for an experienced monger on a first trip to BKK? (Keeping in mind my laid back desires.) Cheers, Sporadic Ps. Yes, I have read and re-read TFF; I am looking for opinions here from other middle aged guys (though all suggestions very welcome.) A six day drunk, I can do at home!

Enjoy your first trip! It will not be your last! I usually carry my cash and ID in my front pocket. Usually not in a wallet in my back pocket. This has changed over the years as I've gotten used to the scene. I either take one of the two sided wallets for a credit card and some cash in the front pocket or if I take my wallet I slip a rubber band or two around it to make it harder to remove from my back pocket if someone tries. **I was on Silom Rd. one night and a couple of kids tried to lift my wallet. My girlfriend at the time, a nurse at one of the hospitals, really jumped all over the kids. I was shocked at her behavior but I guess she was just being protective. Just keep your eyes open and you should be fine. Check out the exchange rate by visiting http://www.xe.com Bring an ATM card and use that for getting money. Available at almost every 7/11 and costs almost nothing with a better exchange rate than cash or travellers cheques. When you get in any Taxi make sure they turn on the meter. Usually there is not a problem but if he refuses just get out and hail the next cab. There are plenty. Don't negotiate. I say f*$k 'em and walk away. If not staying at a major hotel have someone at the front desk write in Thai the address for your hotel. This will help out a LOT. I'll post more if I can think of anything.

Sporadic, For bars with live music, I would recommend Brown Sugar on Sarrasin Road (across from Lumpini Park), or Saxophone Pub near Victory Monument BTS. Also, Mojos off-Soi 33 behind The Office is sometimes good for blues, the others are good for jazz and/or rhythm and blues. All are also restaurants, but I don't go for the food (not that good). Entertainment generally starts around 9:30. Check out the following link for what's happening on your arrival: http://www.bangkokgigguide.com Brown Sugar, in particular, has a very intimate atmosphere, even though the service usually sucks. All these places are quite informal so your BFN won't feel uncomfortable. I've taken BFN's to these places numerous times, and they always seemed to enjoy themselves.

All I can say is that there must be a lot of math challaged people on this forum, or they don't ever look closely at their bank statements. If your ATM card is from the US, your effective exchange rate on ATM withdrawals in the LOS (after all fees) will be much higher than TC's or cash. Same applies to credit card transactions (for purchases) where you will usually pay an extra 2-4% fee on top of the exchange rate. I don't know for sure about ATM cards from the EU, but I would surprised if it is much different than the US.

Mr Alan, I don't know about others, but my USA ATM card has NO fees and a competitive rate to TC's and cash. I also see my balance in baht so I know no fees are assessed.
