While not exactly a newbie looking for good advice. I am by no stretch a “cheep charlie” but it looks like the only time off I can get in the near future is xmas & new year, the time of year I hate the most. Desparate to spend vacation in Thailand any suggestions to avoid the compulsory gala dinner for xmas and new year and all the rest of the bollocks scams at that time of year, avoiding the hordes of farang holiday punters would be good? Is the North a better deal? Still looking for maximum p4p, massage, shopping drinking etc. Or is it a no brainer, just put up with it? What about alternatives Cambo, Viet knowlege gratefully recieved.

If you have the time, why not head to Pattaya? It's only 2 hours away, the prices are cheaper, the NYE celebration is great and many of the hotels do not charge the gala surcharge crap (at least the one I'm staying at). However, if you have not booked a room by now, I'm afraid it may be very difiicult for you.

I can't imagine why anyone would WANT to be here at that time of the year it's particularly boring and high-priced I was in Pattaya for NYE a couple of years ago, and it will be the last time ignorant drunk f***ers firing rockets down the street, etc. idiots abound, no thank you

Actully the safest places to be is in a gala dinner or home. I was in World Trade center so many people and after 00.00 they started to fight. In Phuket the year before they had rockets on the street crazy and like a brother said before me Pattaya is the same. I smoke alot order pizza hut loads of ice cream (you get hungry after smoking) and take your favorite girls and have a nice night. I hate going out for new year

The gala dinners are pretty much standard at hotels everywhere at xmas and New Year's. If you are determined to avoid them, find a smaller hotel without a full restaurant or one that doesn't primarily cater to Western tourists. Evil

I'm with RTB - Xmas and NY are good fun in BKK. Avoid the really busy places (e.g. WTC) as it can get pretty dangerous - but New Year on Cowboy is always good natured and good fun. Lots of smaller hotels don't have the gala dinners, or if they do, its a $20 affair, and so if you don't want it, just miss it and treat it like a surcharge. Depending on budget however, I'd go somewhere nice, pay for the dinner, eat it enjoy it, and then head out to Cowboy - enjoy the good times till midnight then take someone home for a special...

I don't think it's so dangerous as it is ridiculously crowded and a hard area to get in and out of. Unless standing side by side with thousands of other people is your thing, I would stay away from this area. It's just way too crowded.
