I was fairly active here from 2003 until 2007 or so, but I don't recognize most of the names I see these days. I've popped in from time to time but haven't been back to LOS in quite a while. After the world's economy imploded it kind of killed my ability to finance personal trips to exotic lands.

Airline tickets that used to run $600-800 only a few years ago now cost two or even three times as much. Hotels seem substantially more expensive than I remember as well. Looks like Thailand has gotten a lot more expensive over the years. Or maybe I was just lucking out back then.

Speaking of hotels, any preference between JW Marriott Phuket Resort and the Renaissance Phuket Resort?

As for the monger scenes, can you still get the fabled 1000/2000 ST/LT without having to go ugly? On the other end of the spectrum, how much do the Japanese style soapy places charge these days?

Do the monger maps still work? I remember using those plenty during my first visits as I hate the idea of paying a taxi commission for something they played no role in.

Do y'all still meet up for drinks to welcome new recruits and toast returning mongers?

Recently priced tickets are $950 from the US West Coast.

I pay an average of 2,200 baht for decent hotel rooms, 3,000 baht for kick-ass hotels.

Girl prices are still 1000 fr shirt-time, 2000-2500 for LT. Stuff is still comparatively dirt cheap.

Welcome back - when do you plan to be back in town?

Very true. Thailand is still dirt cheap compared to so many other costs we never even think about. Still, plunking down $1500 in airfare (from my location) and another $2,000 for hotels isn't as easy as it used to be. But, of course you only live once! I'm currently looking at October time frame. Might go sooner if I can swing it. Right now my day job is slamming me with more work than I know what to do with but you won't see me complaining about that in an economy like this.

That's a lot for hotels! How long are you planning to stay anyway??? If you're going to stay for a month, ask them for their monthly rate, some places like Grand President have monthly rates, that is, if you don't mind staying there.

If you don't need all the 3+ star ameneties and just want a decent/clean place to crash in modest surroundings, there are plenty of places in the $20-$30/night range.... right in the heart of Sukhumvit. Most are quiet, have wifi, adequate rooms... are you really need if you're not traveling on frequent flyer points and just need a workable place to crash...

Those two hotels in Phuket are rather far from nightlife scene. One is in Mai Kao ; one is in Cape Panwa. Either one is about 40 minutes drive to Patong. Guest-friendliess is another issue. Are you OK with these factors ?

I'm hoping to stay three weeks or so. I'm not as crazy about doing the drab and dreary Misty Suites anymore and I'll be moving around too much to get a single extended rental so that probably means $2,000 or so for nicer hotels with a view (that can be canceled). But who knows, if money gets tight I might end up at the lower end of the block all over again. Lack of easy access to nightlife could be a bit of a problem in Phuket. Would Koh Samui be a substantially better choice than Phuket? I'll probably be traveling with a someone else (not a hobbyist or an intimate girlfriend) looking for a nice beach and luxurious hotel amenities, but as for me I would also like easy access to some local talent as well.

In brief, I personally prefer Phuket than Koh Samui.

I too agree that Phuket is way better than Samui. I personally love the Marriott Resort. It is girl friendly, just a ways out of the action. I usually rent a car or take the hotel shuttle into Patong. When eating, drive five minutes north of the resort and there are great restaurants on the beach that are dirt cheap. I didn't ever see anything dirt cheap in Samui. It was my least favorite place in Thailand.
