Was wondering where the really BAD neighborhoods are. Plan to be exploring Bangkok, but don't want to accidently wonder into the wrong parts...Want to stay away from areas that have high crime and drug rates...Have been reading about some areas where drug realted crimes have resulted in death right on the street...

To be honest there aren't many places in Bangkok which seem to be dangerous as soon as you do not behave nasty! Allthough I heard some people complaining or felt unsecure in the Sukhumvit Soi 3 and 3/1 area with all the russians, black uys and arabs selling their particular goods!
Also some people were complaining about being pickpocketed by some ladyboys in the nana and sukhumvit soi 13 area after 2-3am.
but honestly if you do not behave stupid or to much tourist like you should be very much save all over Thailand!

The general advise in the "ladyboy hangouts" like Nana and Sukhumvit is not to provoke them and walk quickly past if they are in a group. Thats all that is needed and don't give them the chance to pick you pockets.

That's right Dave, Just ignore them and walk past quickly. As for your pocket being picked, be careful the way you would be in any crowded area. Oh yes, your wallet in your front pocket.

One thing I'd like to report. Secondhand info however - A brit friend of mine was walking down the street in sappan kwaii about a block past the go go bars and came across a group of Thai guys basically beating up a farang, for reasons unknown. My friend tried to get the guy to get into a taxi, but quickly decided it may be a bad idea lest the gang turn on him.
That was one of only two times I'd ever heard of foreigners I've personally known being actually assaulted by thais, so I'm assuming he must have done something pretty bad? Anyway, I've been to the bars at Sapaan Kwaii very often, and have never felt any hostility towards foreigners. Even when I'm walking out of the bars and some of the door guys ask me for cash and I decline. Just my experience.
