What, please, is the difference between Patpong (though too crowded these days)and Patong? I know all about the former: but the latter?

Patpong is a street in BKK.
Patong is the main area on the island of Phuket.

To be precise: Patpong is a pair or a trio (if you include the gay Patpong III) of private streets between Silom and Surivongse Rds in Bangrak, Bangkok that are owned by the Patpongpanich family and since the 60s much given over to nightlife. Patpong 1 has the Night Market also; Patpong II still can be driven through and has parking and a Foodland; Patpong III is a cul de sac closed on Surivongse end and if you don't like the Castro district of SF Ca don't go there.
These streets used to be klongs but were covered over.
Ao Patong on the other hand is a BEACH, Patong Beach, in Phuket, the island province of Thailand on the Andaman Sea (northeastern extremity of Indian Ocean.) Probably the most overdeveloped and touristy beach in Phuket, But I am not a Phuket expert so over to someone else who might be.
Phuket means mountain, it is same word as Malay/bahasa Bukit as in Bukit Tima Rd., Singapore for example. Phuket is a tin mining center.
One little 'p' makes a lot of difference...

I guess Patong is also a district (political subdivision) and the district is larger than just the beach part...but nightlife is focused on the beach area...someone who knows Phuket the way I know Bangkok ought to really take this over. Pls! Help! Jumping Jack!

JJ is away at the moment.
yes patong beach has a beach,but is a general name for the 'town'.
currently patong is trying to have it's status upgraded to a town.
patong is not a district in itself,but in the district of kathu on the island of phuket
overdeveloped it may be,but people think it is a new resort,but i wonder.
i have a poster of patong beach with all the major soi's,bars,hotels etc pointed out.
it was first printed in 1994 and not a lot different to now.

by the way chateau...
Bukit means hill in malay not mountain.
We call mountains gunung as in Gunung Kinabalu, or Mt Kinabalu.
And i guess the name Koh Phuket means an island with many hills........
