Hey, just thought this might be nice to add since I fell for it and was denied seeing some neat stuff. However, I lost no money and ended up someplace cool!
While if one goes alone to check out the sights this might not be a problem, if you go with a girl this might apply!

I was in BKK with a dark-skinned Okinawan girl (long-term girl from the US), and virtually all locals we met thought she was local and were surprised when she didn't speak Thai. We did the usual tourist stuff over a few days, then one day we went to go see the Reclining Buddha, then went to the Royal Palace--at the Palace we were told that women couldn't go into the Palace until 5pm. I must say that the guy who suckered us into this was really on it--he knew Amsterdam, Paris, London, and not just like a tourist. We were taken (via tuk-tuk--non-English speaker, but funny, and kicked ass driving) to first a clothing store and then to a "ruby store". Pretty typical, I think.
From the clothing store, I got what turned out to be exceptionally great-fitting shirts (3 for $107-ish....over priced but worked for me). At the ruby place, we drank all the free bottled water offered to us but refused to buy anything; our saleswoman was very obviously mad as Hell we didn't buy anything from her.
I'm okay with it because we knew we were getting scammed after we got in the tuk-tuk, and had a good laugh about it. "International experience" we called it. In the end we went on a boat ride though some canals and ended up at a local place right on the river, across from the Dawn Temple, where we watched a killer sunset; also met a local guy (super nice, but too pushy in the "come back to my place, my wife and I will take care of you" area--perhaps in cahoots with the whole scam). Geckos on the walls, fish lunging for hunks of ice thrown over the wall into the river. Got fed local food and lots of whiskey.
We left there drunk as heck and could've been robbed by anyone--and didn't. I'm a big guy but two determined Thai dudes would've had us. Cabbed it back to our hotel and started over the next day.
Just a piece of advice--don't let anyone deny you entrance to a temple or palace unless they're genuinely official. But if you find yourself diverted, make the best of it. And don't buy rubies unless you know wtf you're doing!
Just watch out for the "gem scam"!

Caveat emptor!
About -95 I and my girlfriend were going to palace and they told that entrance "must be appointed before".
I told them to get lost and got in.
Other version of the rubysacam is that when You are somewhere in the city , You are approached by a person telling that he is teacher/police/lawyer.
Ok, after a short chat he tells that he is going to gemshop "sale" and ask if you'd like to come with.
Person also tells a fine story about "jewels worth 5000 USD sold to 1000 " and if You buy anything You can be sure that shop is not there when You try to find it again with Your worthless pieces.

along this line.. anyone ever taken the tuk tuk rides that guys are offering for B10 or B20 per hour..
One would hope that they would just take you to a massage place or a gem shop, but I could see them take you out quite a ways as the hour is over and then tell you OK, B10 to get here, B500 to get back !!
Or they could just take you somewhere and rob you...

I tried 50 baht per hour in Chiangmai. Guy crisscrossed around and I watched scenery.
After one hour I gave him the money , no problem.
Well , he DID ask me couple of times WHERE I wanted to shopping...

back in europe, my junior partne gives me a call, this nigerian has all these black and white dollar bills, since that is the way the us deliver the gi s salaries, mixed with a chemical it turns out to be real money, what i am trying to say, thai scam, never mind, farang scam in thailand, thats it, ideas and startegies like in alices wonderland

There was a period of time, that spanned a few years, in which a gang of Pakistanis with the collusion of some falangs drugged and murdered falangs in order to take their credit cards and use them for a couple weeks without their loss being reported (shades of Charles Sobrahj). The number was officially estimated to be around 11 I believe but no one really knows how many victims there were.
It is common knowledge at some embassies that in the absence of some political pressure (in the case of a well connected falang), almost any Falang death that can possibly be attributed to drug abuse, heart attack or suicide will be called such. Without any blatantly obvious signs of homicide, the Thai police commonly just close the books with no investigation. (I remember a recent case of a Falang who was found with his hands tied and a plastic bag over his head. Verdict? Suicide.)
But 50 seems a bit high.

sure its LOS, but I'm afraid if any stranger stops me with a hello sir, how are you etc.. he just gets the blank stare and ignored, you KNOW the scam / punchline is not far away ..... Yes the cheap Tuk Tuks all work on a commission, ask one to run you from Cowboy to Nana and he will want 50 baht ... an hour for 20 bt !! you figure it out -
