I would like to know if it's safe to walk alone at night in the Sukhumvit area or if it's better to move only by taxi or tuk tuk. D.

It's safe.

(I will leave it to others to give you the Katoey advisory.)

Katoey advisory:

Watch out for the choke point between the exchange booth just east of the Ambassador food plaza, and the former Big Boy bar (what's it called now?). Keep one hand on your package and one hand on your cash, and don't make eye (or any other) contact.

The one trying to hug you AIN'T your sister.

Dolce31,

When walking in Sukhumvit Road alone at night I do not make any eye contact to people who speak to me nor do I reply to them. This way I have had the feeling to be left in peace and felt safe.

Dolce 31,

if you think it is not safe to walk alone on Sukhumvit, you can hire an escort in any bar on your way

Only your wallet is not safe.

Walking is safer than getting in a tuk tuk. Some of the drivers are crazy

dolce31,

I usually transfer my wallet from my hip pocket to the side pocket. But then I do that even during the daytime in any crowded area.

Bkk is a safe city to walk in. The Katoeys that will try and rob you hang out in the shadows so be careful around flyovers and bus stops where they seem to luck.

There are many variations on where to stash your wallet/money, but I split it up if I have more than a few thousand. Basic money in the wallet and bigger bills in a pocket. I especially like those "expedition" shirts that you can buy for about b300 (Camel Wear) .. they have   pockets on the front with a button and they are a great place to put B2-5K ..

I share the posters aversion to Tuk Tuk drivers, they are pretty wild and I am not sure they are that trustworthy tho have never known anyone that has been robbed by them physically. They do have a tendency to take people to massage parlors/gem shops when the passenger is not interested. I have wondered what the deal is with the Tuk Tuk drivers who offer a hour or two for B20 ?? I have speculated on possible outcomes and none of them are good.

That said, one of the best rides I ever had was in a Tuk Tuk after 2am .. coming back from PP to Thermae .. I really haggled the guy down to a low price and we did Phra Ram IV, Asoke to Thermae in record time.. on two wheels for most of the turns ..Zooming in and out of traffice .. fortunately I was well oiled and loved it.. hell you would pay $20 to go to Disney World for a similar ride
