about 40 bt for motor cycle taxi nana/Ppong - as to learning Thai, guess it depends how keen you are, and/or how good with languages, although many people Ive spoken to who have gone to Thai learning classes, havent really got that good a grasp of the language - sleep with a dictionary is the answer, my advice is to carry a small notebook with you, and ask the TG or any nearby thai, what is this/how do you say that, etc .. in thai, have then ennunciate slowly, then write that down in your OWN phonetics, will only take you a few weeks to pick up enuff words/sentances, to help you get by, likewise, if you do use a thai phrase book, go thru it with a TG present, as everyones phonetics differ -

TPE: Your notebook method is exactly the one I used for my first 3 months here. It's almost the only study I ever did.

As for learning Thai and not having the possibility to visit a language school or in addtion to it, this notebook thing is very smart. The words and phrases are the ones you hear and use in daily life and you can write them down in the way how you would pronounce them.
I did the same for over one year, but was suddenly interrupted in my learning by one of my former TGFs who threw my note book away... She said that she thought I did not use it anymore, but in reality I started to speak and understand Thai a little too well for her taste. She got worried about me understanding everything that she and her friends were talking about.
During November last year I restarted to note my memories, adding new things and I am having a notebook again. I think this is a very smart way to improve your Thai in daily life once you know a few basics.
