[Virgin post so please be gentle - and if you can't say you love me at least give me the courtesy of a reach-around.]

I bought a ticket for a 3-week trip to Thailand (first trip to the LOS) back in December but my work situation changed soon thereafter and I thought the trip was not going to happen.

Well, lucky me - the work situation is resolved and my trip is a go.  The challenge now is that I haven't done much planning-wise besides getting the ticket to BKK.  Having read through the archives of this great forum, I figured I'd ask my soon-to-be brothers for some advice on the following:

1. Hotel. Not much luck finding a room at many of the recommended hotels in this forum - something about Chinese New Year and my arrival date of Feb. 9.  Sigh.  Thankfully, I Pricelined a room at Novotel Lotus - more than I wanted to spend but what the hell.  I found a few positive remarks about the place in this forum but not a lot.  Did I screw up?  How is this hotel, location and quality-wise?

2. Activity planning.  Seeing that I would probably end up killing myself if I spent all three weeks in BKK, I want to get out and see the country (north and south) while I'm there, probably using BKK as my jumping point each time.  My question: is it better to try to plan this stuff out now (hiking/sightseeing in the north, diving/irradiating my skin in the south) or wait until I'm in country?  I'm booked at my hotel for a few days - I arrive late on Feb. 9 and check out on Feb. 13. - so I could do the planning on those days and save the BKK sight-seeing until later in the trip.

Forum or email feedback would be greatly (GREATLY) appreciated.  I'm used to having my shit wired and could use some advice here on the best way to proceed.

On a related note, I'd be happy to meet some people in person and get the advice first-hand.  Anybody up for meeting me for a few free rounds on Feb. 10?

BK - if I'm able to link up with you at any point during my trip (RT or otherwise), you're set as you won't be allowed to buy a drink in my presence.  I owe you big-time for helping me out with this great forum.

Thanks guys.

wellcome to the forum pawadwan.
Novatel Lotus is on soi 33 and surround by many pubs and few massage places. So you are all set and hotel is guest friendly. So you are all set there. BTS is close by.

I would suggest you make a plan right now while you have more time in  your hand  because once you get to bkk, is hard to sit and plan while you are having so much fun.

You should include pattaya, koh samui and chiang mai in your itenary.
Penthouse hotel in pattay is fun place to be but you need to book it now.
Koh samui, try to get a room at chewang resort which is right in the middle of chewang beach and not too far from shopping,  beach and night time action. I hope that helps. I am sure rest of the brothers fill you in with more information

Best be careful, BK, you are starting to talk like a TG.  Maybe you are spending too much time in researching how they think.

If you are going to stalk them, you have to think like they do.

Now, this is terminology to my liking. Bring protection for "splash-down".

Welcome Padawan: I'm a believer in preparation but I'm also a believer in spontaneity. Plus, LOS has a way of sweeping you away on a tide of events, so...

Make your plans as well as you can but be prepared to see them all go out the window. Sometimes it's best just to lean back and back and enjoy the ride -- especially if you hook up with some of the skilled and experienced Brothers.

I agree with everything that has been said so far, especially MrJoe.!

The LOS should really be called The LOWP or Land Of Wasted Plans!  Other than business trips, I have yet to actually be able to follow through on any plans I have made for vacation trips.

If you want to keep things wired, my suggestion, for what it is or isn't worth, is to make your reservations in the areas you would like to go but make sure you know what the cancellation rules are and keep an eye on that.

Or, if you want to try to get into more of a Thai mentality are not as fussy about the quality of the place you stay, make no reservations and just arrive in an area and first find a hotel for at least the first night and if you like it, extend, if not, go on a hunt for a new one the next day.

I know you said you like to keep things tight but if you maintain that outlook in Thailand too rigidly it will eat you up.  But, even if you don't get to stay in exactly the place you want to stay or you don't get to do exactly what you want to do, it beats the shit out of being back home and there is always the next time, and the time after that, and the time after that,,,,,  ;)

Yeah, letting things unfold as they are wont to do is fun.  Did that on a trip to New Orleans once, banging around each day for a new place to crash and winging everything else.  Of course, the experience was in a culture which I understood and with a language that was reasonably close to my native tongue.

I really want to experience the Thai culture as much as possible.  I've been looking forward to this trip for a long time.  I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if it will be possible to make arrangements at the last minute if I decide to, say, go diving in Phucket.  Will I be able to book a flight at a reasonable cost?  Get off the plane and find a hotel room to crash for the night?  If I can do that without too much hassle or extra last minute cost, I think that's what I would like to do.

What do you think?
