Sup':
For the newbies, as well as myself; the term farlang or farang is used all over the forum. Do they mean the same thing??
I thought I had a grasp on the term, but have seem different definitions pop up.
So ... what is considered a farlang or farang ??
Is a farlang or farang any person that is NOT born in Thailand??
I thought it meant a person that is "white", caucasion, haole, ect. Basically a non-asian person.

ABC,
Apart from the cucasians and the East Asians, there are the Indians that are distinctly different. Wonder where they fit into the equation.
Even among the Indians, there are the darker skinned brothers from Sounth India and the wheatish skinned brothers from Northern India!

Well, a farang for them is isually the NON-ASIAN buddy. The ones from Europe or North America (mainly blondes w/ white skin).
Black guys are not considered farangs, or at least the TGs don't call them like that. Same thing with Asians i.e. Khun JIN (Chinese), Khun Niphon (Japanese), etc....

plus there is a thread on here that discusses the origins of the word...there are two distinct theories.....it was active in December as I remember......MrJoe brought in the second that I'd never heard...and some additional reading if I remember.....ahhh...what a scholar he is....

my 2 cents worth...
i was asking my TG on this issue...who would be considered as a farang/farlang and she said its only to caucasians. regardless of hair colour...as long as you have white skin.
and like ABC quote...black guys are not involved though i was told that they do get charged farang/farlang rates at some places. same goes for middle eastern and indians as well. depends on your luck i would think.
as far as i know the people who does not get charged for the extras would be mainly from south east asia region...up to japan and korea.
well this is coming from one source, my TG so if there are more indifferences please post...would like to know more too.

Hi all,
I post the stuff cited below in another thread but I remind you that THIS is what a GG-girl/B-girl or the like "consider" as a farang. There is somewhere else some readings concerning the real origin of the word and I remember it has close relation to the "Thai pronunciation" for the word FOREIGNER long time ago. Cheers.

Results will vary.
Farangs can be just non-Asian westerners of Caucasoid descent (common use) OR they can be anyone who is not Thai (Mongloid, Negroid, and Caucasoid.... pygmies and aboriginees as well).... also used, but perhaps in a less common way.

A wide-spread belief in Thailand is that the word "farang" (Caucasian) is derived from the French word "francais". This derivation is implausible on phonetic and historical grounds. It is in fact a popular misconception. It is true, however, that these words have the same ultimate source.
The word is attested in various forms in languages in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. It is clear that the word originated as "Frank" in Europe and spread eastwards along Muslim trade routes.
Thai most likely borrowed the word from influential Muslim Persian or Indian traders in the 17th century or even earlier. The Persian word was "farangg". The term probably was used to refer to early Portuguese traders and subsequently to all Europeans (ie., non-Muslims).
It is possible that the Thai word "farangset" - "French" - is a blend of the word "farang" and the French word "francais", ie., "farangset" is actually derived from "farang", not vice versa. Certainly, the word "farang" existed prior to, and independently of, "farangset".

No, wrong.
Only Caucasians are referred to as 'farang'. Black-American would be referred to as 'Niko' or 'Neeko'.
Just for your information.
An Indian-American would be 'Kek'. A Chinese-American Kon Cheen and so on.
BTW Oz I am quite disappointed that after all your trips to LOS you still cannot distinguish between colors

I believe Kon Jin means chinese by race, not a chinese born outside of BKK. It does not specifically refer to an American born chinese or a China born chinese, it means any person who is of the chinese race. Same with Kek whether he is from England, India, or BKK.

To start with it's spelt COLOURS unless you're an American? On my trips to Los I mainly look at nice shades of Brown!
My understanding of the word Farang is that it is a generic term for Foreigners. One of my TG friends calls Afro-American or similar Coloured people Farang dam. I believe dam is the Thai word for black? I stand to be corrected and make no pretence to be a Thai Linguist that some members do???

'Farang Lao' is used as a joke to refer to 'simple' caucasians. Because some Thais believe that Laotians are more 'simple' people. With 'simple' I mean appearance/style or way of living.

Oz, as you know I am a non-native speaker, but use American English so it's colors to me.
Secondly, she maybe uses 'Farang Dahm' but it's not the usual term for 'negroid' people.
BTW You just got '10 points' for your attempt at the Thai Language. But not a Thai Linguist yet....
