I realize this is maybe a pretty stupid question but are shorts / t shirt / sandals acceptible in most places in bkk - like in PI? I have read that you can't wear them in temples. I have never been in a Buddhist country before.

t-shirt/shorts and sandals are okay in bars and in massage parlors. Clubs/discos will not allow you in though.

If one were to show up at say Wat Pho, one may be politely pulled aside and requested to don a long sleeve shirt. I was redirected by a nice guard type to a building where I was given an ill fitting long sleeve shirt with a collar. I learned the hard way, touring the temple in a sleeveless lightweight vest was not in very good taste.
This happy go-go poster takes a lightweight dress pant and a few shortsleeve casual dress shirts. Never hassled about the sandals however.

I read somewhere that sandals are OK - even in temples - as long as you wear socks. Is this correct?

In the Phils the saying was that if you wear shorts it shows that you do not have money for jeans.
I kept this habit when in LOS and never wear shorts in public, with the exception of the beach or the hotel area.
But no worries, this is just me...

The only dress rule in BKK is that you must were a condom when you enter most clubs!!! You can also wear them in temples, just make sure its a clean one.
Flavoured condoms are viewed a smart casual dress and ribbed ticklers as after evening wear.

CRAIGOZ- I understand the need for decorum, though the last time I wore the condom to the club, it was hard to breath. And why was everyone calling me dickhead??
Then there is that thing about "one sized fits all". Being the fathead I am, I found it tight and constricting, as well as the aforementioned suffocation. I am as much a slave to fashion as the next guy, though sometimes reason must rule. Any further club fashion advice would be greatly appreciated.
