Hello everybody

First of all i want to introduce myself to you all, i m French, 29 years old, working on Ebay as an antique seller,  and i would spend most of the month of September in LOS.
I found this forum while searching info about Thailand on the web, and to be honnest when i first saw it i thought it was probably a nest of pervert  ...but after reading a few (ok...a lot) of post i just realised that there was a lot of fine guys here and many with a wonderfull sense of humour! So now its time for me to do my first newbie post ...i just hope you can indulge on my poor funny english LOL!
Here are my questions:
1) does any of you know where are the Buddhist amulettes markets of BKK(also any flea market would be VERY interesting to me!)? (i started collecting/reselling this type of item recently and it is the main reason i come to LOS)
2)Being a vegetarian i am a bit worry about food...what is your experience about it ?Do i have any chance to find anything with no meat/fish/seafood  to eat? (except beer of course LOL)
3)I also would like to have a protective tatoo made during my stay....does any of you know where to go (i know those are made in monasterys usually,NOT by tatoo shop)
4) i plan to stay at the" Raumchitt Plaza hotel", as it seem to be a good one ...any comment?

That would be all for now,of course if i can meet some of the members of this forum during my stay i would be glad to offer them a few drinks as a reward for the info !

Thanks by advance

Madfrog

JackRabbit present...

First some advise : check the upper right corner of the screen ; You'll see "Last 25 : latest posts" in there.
Click it and then You'll see "All topics in here."
Click it and You'll get ALL topics in alphabetical order.

Look them and ou'll get a lot of info , do Your homework.

Then some info: Take BTS Sukhumvit line and drive all the way up to Mo Chit station. There is The Weekend Market , the biggest flea in BKK.
GET MAP !

Second place to find amulets is Chinatown around Yaowarat and near temples.
I have seen amulet sellers there.

Vegertarian Food : Check "Restaurant" - section.

Protective tattoo ? Sorry , zero info.

CaVa mad frog,

1) Amulets.  There is an amulet market in BKK and I think it is in Chatachuk Market (which is worth a visit anyway).  I will check this out and post later.  Chatachuk (also called JJ) is located on the last stop of the sky train silom line (mo chit).  Just get out there and follow the crowd.

2) Vegetarian food.  Im not a vegetarian, but occasional eat veggie food.  THere is no problem getting by without meat andseafood, thanks mainly to BKK's ex governor - Chamlong Srimuang who was a strckt vegetarian.  There are many vegetarian and vegan restaurants.

the phrase for I am a vegetarian is phom kin jeh - this does also mean to eggs, cheese etc (vegan)

for no meat you could say phom kin tae phak - I only eat vegetables (this will be taken to mean rice, veg, friut etc).

3) cant help with this one.

Welcome to the forum and have fun in LOS

Re amulets

There is a massive collection of amulet traders in the streets near the entrance to the Grand Palace (Bangkok's leading tourist attraction). You will find other collections outside most of the major temples.

Of course, prices vary hugely depending on the 'potency' of particular amulets - and I think it's most unlikely that the most valuable would be sold on the street. It shouldn't be difficult getting guidance on this - I'm sure any English-speaking trader or monk would be very happy to share his knowledge on the subject with a genuinely interested farang.

I have also seen books and catalogues (in Thai). Doubtless one or two are considered definitive and might well be worth getting translated if you are a serious trader and/or collector.

There is a ban on removing Buddha images (however cheap and plasticky) from Thailand, and pretty draconian restrictions on the legitimate export of antiquities. I think you would need to check the legal situation relating to amulets.

Hey brother Madfrog, welcome to the brotherhood. I'm sure any restaurant you go to will have a few veggy dishes on the menu so you shouldn't have a problem.
The problem may start if you stay at Ruamchitt Plaza. I stayed there with my ex last Sept. and the first night we were there we spent the whole night trying to breathe. Apparently there was some kind of fungus or germs being blown into the room when the AC was turned on. My sinuses didn't get completely back to normal until 3 months after I got home.
Hopefully they've bothered to clean the filters in each of the rooms AC's since then but for your own protection if you do plan on staying there take the time to clean the AC filter yourself. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Peace

It was said the tattoo can protect evil spirit and bring goodluck.

I concur on the general idea of visiting the weekend market, also called Chatuchak Market. Buy a 'Nancy Chandlers Map of Bangkok' to fill you out on shopping venues. Used it when I was in BKK and found it a big help.

As for your English, I say it is very good. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

And welcome to this forum too.

WOW, allready 7 replyes after only a few hours , i must say that i am VERY impressed!!!
Im going to try to reply to each of you all now ;o):
1) Nokna: Thanks a lot for the greeting, its nice to see that here too some American people can speak to a French saying something else than "What's Up Saddam" (i had a lot of those loosers recently on Ebay...really pissed me of....)
2)Jackrabbit: Yes Master, i m going to be a good boy and do my home work, thanks for the info !
3)Kev29ie: Thanks for the info and teaching me my first sentences in Thai (i just hope its not some sort of twisted joke like a sentence saying "i eat only duck's shit " LOL)
4) Arcadius:Thanks for the info, i know about the restriction, and in fact since i allready received many of those amulettes by post from a contact i have in BKK i plan onto sending them to myself instead of going throught custom with them....
4) Cmore....thanks for the advice about AC...I would for sure follow it or at least try( i live in a cold region called Bretagne, so a AC system is sort of Alien stuff to me )
5)Alter ego: Those protective Tatoo are supposed to protect their owner of any type of harming if they are done properly...i heard a lot of amazing stories about them (its a bit like Dzi beads or maulettes, but it has to be personalyse to work, you cant simply choose one on a catalog, also its made the "old way",so it HURT when you have it done, its not like those modern one at all...
6)cold187: Thanks for the reply, if you can remeber the name of the place i am VERY interested !
7)MickyK1971 : thanks for the suggestion, about my english, i lived for five years with a women from Jersey...it help me a lot to improve  english (and a few other more private skills too  LOL)

Its now nearly half past midnight here and the girlfriend is calling me ...so i guess its time to leave you all

I wish to you all a good day
