Does anybody know anything about possibly obtaining dual citizenship? I was born in thailand to an American father and thai moms but grew up in the US. Possibly thinking about moving here at some point if i can figure out how to get a job in the thai film/tv industry (i work in film stateside) and seeing if i can circumvent the visa route and whatnot since i was born here. Anyways ma dukes says that i am a thai citizen as well as an american but do not necessarily have any documentation to prove otherwise that i know of. She is currently searching for my thai birth certificate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. by the way i just wanted to say that i'm glad to be a part of the site and look forward to reading all the useful info that everyone proivides.

sbxabyss I just did this myself a year ago. Basically, you need to get a Thai ID card, once you get that, everything else is easy. But getting a Thai ID card is a pain. I took the easiest route which was luckily available to me. I had my name put down on my, don't know the exact name for it, but official family register on land. Basically, my family has some land and there's a list of descendants on it. I brought my thai birth certificate (my parents had the forsight to register my birth with the thai consulate) and then got my name put on the registrar and then got my ID card. Took me 3 days of red tape to accomplish that. I tried doing this while in the states, but its basically impossible. You need to be here in thailand to do it. Of course you're going to have to face national service (unless you are a girl). If you don't plan on doing anything official before you're i think 29 you may not have much to worry about. But if you get a gov't job or apply for a passport or do something that may trigger a background check, they'll ask if you've finished your military service. I entered the military draft lottery and didn't get selected. Its called "gain tahan" or slang they call it "yip bie dam bie dang" or pick black or red as you literally stick your hand in a bucket and if you pull out a red you're clear but if you pulled black you got drafted. There are various ways to insure a red chip or avoiding it all together. But its not something i wish to discuss here.

Quote: from Q on 2:28 am on June 28, 2003 I am sorry if this is something that I have missed (I did read the newbie rules and the help section) but how do you file a field report?
Simple, just go over here... http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/forums.cgi?forum=9 Click on the "New topic" button, and type away.... just make sure your CAPS LOCK is OFF.

Monk, Thanks for the insight. My moms owns land and property over there but this is not "family" land that was passed down or anything. It's something that she's acquired since moving to the states some 30 years ago. My uncle did mention something about me getting a thai id but didn't go into detail about the procedure. I do not speak thai so there may be a language barrier there since he doesn't speak english either. now would i be able somehow get a thai id card if moms can't find my thai birth certificate? And if she does find it, will i need her there with me to handle such matters? I would like to somehow address this matter when i go back next feb. With regards to thai sevice, I'm 33 y.o. so i presume that is a nonissue. anyways feel free to email me directly if you'd like. anyways just tryin to learn more about my thai heritage and take pleasure in what thailand has to offer...seroiusly contemplating making a move there!!! good lookin out! much appreciated.

Tambien bahn = household registration, every Thai is listed on a relative's tambien bahn, whether he/she actually lives there (at the address) or not. So, if you were born in Thailand you ought to be on the same tambien bahn as your mother. You may have to obfuscate about your patrimony and take your mother's maiden name. Get a Thai lawyer. You will need one.

Want to work in the Thai film industry but you can't speak Thai? Better plan on learning. The biggest production house is Kantana. If you have any access to Coppola, he's a buddy of the M.C. (Prince) Mui who directed Suriyothai and who is very influential.

I used the search engine and looked around the site but found nothing specific about the GSM network used in BKK. I have a GSM phone from when I was in Belgium last year, can buy a prepaid sim card for it to use while I am in BKK? If so, how much can I expect to pay for a sim? For example, in Belgium there were a coupel different companies that offer a "pay & go" type of service where you paid between 25-50.00 euro for the sim card and some minutes and then you could reload the phone with euro by buying a card for 12.50 - 25.00 euros. Was a great system I thought. SIN out!

GSM 900(DTAC) and 1800(AIS) in BKK; SIM cards for DTAC are about 1500 baht, including about 800 baht of minutes (5 baht/min), AIS similar. Orange is a player, too, but considered not usable outside of BKK, and some other major cities. These numbers are a year old, but pretty close. You can buy DTAC SIMS and refills at any of a zillion DTAC shops (on BTS platforms), and refills at 7-11, 500 baht per. hope this helps, haam sup
