What you are really asking is "any fools out there" Let me give you an example.. years ago I used to spend more time in Pattaya.. I was there when the US fleet came in ... it is not unusual for the best Navy fighters to be encouraged to fight in one of the open rings .. In these fights the top boxers have little chance.. Once I watched a fight where the Navy boxer (a heavyweight, perhaps 220#'s or so, about 6-2) got in the ring with a 5-9, 160# thai.. the navy guy was pretty obnoxious and didn't follow any of the basic rules of Thai conduct in the ring .. the Thai kick boxer took his time and beat the guy up pretty badly ... I hope the guy learned a lesson in how to behave yourself.. and no, he was not drunk

Its down to condition also , if a decent heavyweight western boxer caught a middleweight Thai boxer, or any style, on the jaw, it would be lights out. But a skillful Muay Thai fighter, if he was big enough, reach etc, should be able to use his extra "weapons " (elbows, feet ,knees) to keep the opponent at bay. No amount of training in Western boxing would prepare your legs for the "Tae Tad" low kicks. These sap the strenghth, hurt like hell, stop you from being able to move...end of story. I have trained at Muay Thai, for 15 years (up until 2 years ago), you cannot compare it with any other Martial Art, it would be dangerous to even try an exhibition , as Muay Thai is never practiced in half measures. I trained at Tae Kwon Do previously, a good martial art, but found it frustrating in Tournaments, having to wear all kinds of protective gear when fighting Full contact. You can't take these pads/helmets with you in a street fight..lol ps No amount of training is any help against a knife or piece of 2 by 4

I suppose you have seen the Ultimate Fight Contests. The wrestlers and Ju Juitsu guys come out on top. Muay Thai boxers didn't do real well at all. Any explanation?

The reason why Brazilian Jiujitsu fighters and grapplers tend to rule the "mixed martial arts" rings and cages (UFC, Pride and other promotions) is that fights almost always go to the ground. A thai boxer who has not been sufficiently cross-trained in several disciplines will be completely lost on the ground, unable to defend himself against submission locks, chokes or even your basic ground & pound hammering. Thai boxing is said to be the most dangerous martial art, even the Lonely Planet quotes an anecdote of top-quality karatekas and other kickers and boxers coming to Thailand to test their skills and getting beat up by the Muay Thai guys. This, I don't doubt at all. Of all the stand-up martial arts, Muay Thai is the most lethal. But when fights go to the ground, jiujitsu practitioners, wrestlers, grapplers, shootfighters and other cross-trained no-holds-barred fighters will reign supreme. By the way, there are a couple of strong fighters out there in the MMA world whose primary fighting style is quite close to Muay Thai - lightweight Duane Ludwig most definitely, and also Vanderlei Silva, who is Brazilian but tends to do most of his damage with his knees.

As SetLaew explained , its the ground work that wins these contests. If you wanted the ultimate style for streetfighting, a combo of Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu would be close. In UFC and similar, including the Gracie brothers ( Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) it tends to be the wrestling based fighters that win , most of these have skills in other arts also. But if anyone would like to try a Karate based style against Muay Thai, be my guest. It would be interesting to see a Thai boxer, who had learnt Jiu-Jitsu in depth, go against a grappler. Perhaps in the future we will see more cross-over arts becoming more recognised than the "Freakshow" of the UFC.

I fought an 18 year old Muay Thai boxer that was working for my company a couple years ago. He threw his leg at me, I caught it, and sweeped his other. (I was weighing in at a trim 79Kg at the time) As mentioned before, Muay Thai fighters are helpless on the ground. Thus, your first and primary attack must get them to the ground. I let him back up. He threw a punch, I dodged it, and managed to grab his arm and pull him to me chest to chest. Then I gave him a Greco Roman style throw over my shoulder. Again letting him up. Then I shot in on him, He kicked me in the head on the way in, but not hard enough to keep me from single legging him to the ground. I then put him in a craddle and squeezed the air out him. I let him up again, and that was it. He didn't want any more. Mind you he was the same height as me, muscular, but just didn't have the strength and bulk to get me off him when I got him on the ground. This was all in fun, and we were not intending on making one another bleed.

Hehehe, I am not a fighter, I am a beer drinker (and a lover if I don't pass out drunk). It takes alot to piss me off. Plus, whenever I do get pissed I always remember that I could really hurt somebody pretty bad. I don't want that. I have some boxing training, some wrestling training, and some martial arts training (mostly kicks). I grew up getting my ass beat, and then I decided to do something about it. The key to fighting is to always have something for your apponent, no matter what skills they have. A little knowledge of wrestling. boxing, and martial arts will turn you into a pretty good street fighter. But, a friendly sparring match I am always up for.
