I hope a couple people find this useful.

Always bring a power converter if you have items you need to plug in (i.e. a battery charger for your digital camera so you can take lots of nasty pics of your TG)

I bring a power strip so that I can plug in multiple things at once like a laptop and a charger.

I like to bring gifts home for family so I pack light for 3 weeks and put my medium suitcase inside of my large suitcase so that I have room for gifts on the way home.

Since I live out of my suitcase I have learned to pack my undies and socks in zip lock bags so they are easy to get out of the bag.

In every bag I have my name, the address of my parents (so that if someone does get my luggage they don't go visit my house too when I am not home), and my itinerary so that if it is lost they can look inside and see what airport it should be at, telephone number, and email address.

I do bring luggage locks so that I can use them in my hotel room.

Condoms baby, I like Trojan brand, I hate Lifestyles (they break).

I do enjoy giving the girls small gifts, they seem to appreciate those small gift bags of bubble bath, soap, and lotions from the US.  I can usually buy them for a few bucks a piece.

A bottle of wine is nice to bring if you find a special someone to share it with, maybe I am mistaken but I did not find a good selection of wines that were reasonable in Thailand.

Copies of your passport and I bring copy of the back of my credit cards so that if they are lost I can read the back of the cards to call and report them stolen.

Bathing suit and beach towel if you go to the beach in Pattaya or somewhere else.

Basic clothes, shorts, shirts, please remember you are representing your country so look nice, I take 3 pairs of shoes or sandals because I do so much walking that I usually end up with a blister, then I change shoes and get another blister, ect, anyway changing shoes helps.

I bring US money and cash them $100 at a time (better rates for larger amounts).

I usually pay for everything in cash because if you use a credit card they tack on the fees that are charged to them for using credit cards.  Travelers checks are great too.

Candy- boy do those bar girls like it when you walk in with some candy that is new to them, I don't suggest chocolate because of the heat down there.

Two way radios can be nice if you head down with friends.  And bring your international drivers license if you choose to rent a scooter in Pattaya or somewhere else.

Well thats enough rambling for me, I hope this helps,
Doug

Thanks, found the tips very helpful.  Like the idea about taking a copy of the back of your credit cards.

I am thinking of packing a little less then I think I need and then buying any clothes that I seem to be short of.

Can you get good sandals over there.  I assume you should be able to.  Mine died this year and now as it is winter selection is poor to buy a new pair at home.

They have good clothes there but I am not sure of the shoes.  I will tell you that I love the belts that I bought there, I have not found a better leather than what some of those places use.   When buying clothes be sure to buy 1 size larger because they run smaller there.  I bought some XL shirts and they fit like a LG, also get some clothes tailored if you are there.  I went to a place called "James Fashions" and got 6 shirts (short and long sleeve) and a wool/cashmere blend suit all tailor made for $165 US, but you will have to haggle with them for that price.  I plan on getting a Tux made this time (you can just bring a photo of the tux you want and they will make one for you) and about 10 more shirts, and maybe some slacks too.  Other ppl may have good suggestions on where to go to get clothes made, but I was happy with this place, especially for the price.

Good idea & List

I like the idea of bringing a few nice clothe to "represent your country".
About shoes no worry you would find any kind you like and even some you cant think of LOL

Now how would i do my bag next time i go:
1)very few clothe (enought for 5 days if i am here for 3 weeks...), laundry is very cheap (especially if you DONT use the one of the hotels, and there are nice clothe for sale virtually everywhere! About size: YES, they do them FAR smaller in LOS than in Europe...so manage to unpack/try them before to buy otherwise you are on for some surprise (like me, i bought a funny Tee-shirt for the girlfriend, she is very thin so i took "S"...once open we found out it was maybe large enought for a 6 years old kid
2) another empty bag inside the first one...the bags they sell in LOS are pure crapp...i bought 2 and they both cracked after 2 days!
3)condoms? hum...to me the "Durex" i ccan get in BKK are ok..

So yes...i think my bag would be less than 5kg so that i can keep it with me and avoid the loooooong waiting at the airport!

I would buy anything else i need when i arrive and throw/give most of it before i go in order to save on wheight to be abble to bring back more interesting items

Maybe I can add a couple of useful tips to those already on this thread.

Clothing and shoe sizes are a real problem. All the rip-off stuff in the markets are too small for anyone of a large-sized frame like me, 6'2" and 200lb, so I have to buy stuff in stores like Robinson or Nike originals, and these places are soooo expensive. A genuine pair of Levi 501's cost about 200USD. Shoe sizes are a similar problem. If you need anything above a size 12 (US) almost impossible to find.

Travelling light is easy. Laundry costs are very reasonable (not the hotel, just look around for an independent nearby - reliable and quick as well as cheap). I always end up packing stuff that I never use. Can't get out of the habit.

Hope this helps.

I read that american express traveller's checks have poor exchange rates and possibly a fee to cash them. Can anyone posts any personal experience with this in BKK and/or Pattaya?

If I go to far out places where how I dress doesn't matter, I take the things (shirts, socks, etc.) I like the least. So that when I am done wearing them, I throw them away leaving them at the hotel -no expenses in laundry and less weight to bring back (or good excuse to buy new ones).

Mr Alan
American Express Travelers checks are widely accepted, especially at banks. There is usually about a 23 baht charge per check, but they give the best exchange rate on these, even better than US $100 bill (cash). So just make sure that you get travelers checks in denominations of $100 and always have your passport with you to cash them. Similar idea for TC in Euro's, etc.
