I've just discovered that the day of my arrival in BKK is also the King's Birthday. Is this going to have any affect on opening times, etc? I'm seriously concerned about availability of my already-long-anticipated jet-lag therapy..... Any bros in the know, can you help please?

Chances are that you're f*cked. Things will be locked down tight all day is my guess. Doesn't keep the street whores out the equation though, you just won't be able to get drunk enough to look at 'em...

Similar situation for myself? I have booked my (second) visit to Bangkok for February. I have seen somewhere there is a holiday 15th or 16th. Can anyone confirm whether I will face similar issues - or is it just major religious and Royal family holidays that see total shutdown? Thanks for any help/advice

15th or 16th February 2004? I think you have your wires crossed. 16th February 2003 was Maka Bucha, but in 2004 it falls on 5th February. Things were closed up tight IIRC, but it looks like you skate... As a general rule, everything closes completely on King's Birthday, Queen's Birthday, Coronation Day and a few other civil and major religious holidays. With the minor holidays it's up to your local corrupt police district whether they will f*ck your holiday or not.

Ah ok. Many thanks. Think it might have been on a hotel website listing the public holidays. Don't think it mentioned which year, so most likely was the 2003 dates. Many thanks for the response. I arrive on 12th so looks like normal service for the duration of my stay

Thanfully on 5 december I'm not arriving til evening so not too long to wait for my supper.... It seems it always pays to check out important dates before travelling. Thanks for the heads up VJ

No problem guys. For the civil holidays -- those not involving Buddha -- they do stay on the same day year after year. And even when something like the King's Birthday falls of a Saturday, while government offices and banks may close on Friday, the bars still shut down on the actual real day. Buddhist religious holidays however will float around. This is because they are based on a lunar calendar which is always out of sync with our fixed 12-month standard. It's like Easter, but not as arbitrary as Ramadan. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a comprehensive and easy to read website with the 2004 Thai holidays and post the link should I find one.
