Is 7 days not enough time to spend in Thailand as the flights are quite long from the USA? Would you skip BKK and go right to Pattaya with only one week? How long do you guys stay for when you go?

IMO, absolutely not enough time for flying from US. That is one hell of a long flight and fairly expensive. You'll probably just be coming out of your jet-lag in a week. Just makes sense to me if your going to spend all this money on a ticket you should stay a while and make the most out of it.

Up to you what you want to do, just my humble opinion... Maybe extend trip to 2 weeks. 1 week Pattaya, 1 week Bkk.
If you're rich, time doesn't matter, for you can come and go as you please.

Tiger,

Varies from person to person. In the begining I spent 3months Thailand, 3 month states for three years. Then moved here pernmantly.

Got a job last year now it's 8wk 3wk.

I know you got a lot of questions, so my best answer is seeing as how this is your first time I would keep it at a week or maybe two max., unless you have a lot of money to part with.

That will be just long enough to wet your interest and short enough to protect you from falling in love and sending a fortune back to subsudise a young girls monthly income.

This in itself will give you a lifelong goal to reach. It will probably change your whole outlook on life. Things will go from eating junk food and buying junk that you don't need to saving up money to come to Thailand again.

So relax, enjoy your first trip. Don't try to everything at once. What out for the rip off's. Treat everyone with respect and you should fit right in.

If you are coming in August, practice on the Thai Language. It'll be a little warm, just bring a couple pair of shorts and shirts, you can pick up anything else you need over here.

I like to stay at least 17 days. Two days to get over jet lag and 14 days fun in the sun. O lets not forget the 28 hour travel time from Philly.

I like Pattaya as it's cheaper and easier to get around. Check out http://www.pattayatalk.com for up to date info on Pattaya.

Tiger, you need to stay longer than 7 days. It takes your nose 9 days to get used to the stench of squid. When you get used to the smell, you can finally have a quite enjoyable stay. But if your very sensetive to the squid smell it could take up to 3 weeks to get over it.

Cheers
The Squid Guy

perhaps a newbie question: what is that smell (i would say stench!) that is all over the place...and I am not talking about the awful-smelling food!...i am talking about the 'smell' of the city when you get off the plane or get in a cab...not a big deal, I guess as one would have to tolerate certain 'unpleasanteries' if one is to ahve such pleasures in life...but just asking...

Like the guys posted above, 7 days is not enough time. I wouldn't stay any less than 2 weeks coming from the states (im american btw). My first trip I stayed one month and my second was 2 months.

On my last trip, a buddy flew out with me and he stayed 2 weeks. he split his time as follows:

-bangkok 3 nights - it is enough time to get your feet wet, adjust your sleep and see some sights during the days.

-phuket 5 nights- slower paced than bangkok, plenty of women, no smog, and beautiful beaches. enough time to spend a day/night on phi phi if you want.

-pattaya 5 nights- Patong beach on steroids. larger, dirtier, larger nightlife scene and has many more women.
pattaya's beach is dirty but you can take a speedboat to some pretty nice beaches on the islands off the coast.

-bangkok 1night - one last night in bangkok and go out with bang!!!

hope this helps

Tiger,

Definitely agree with the replies to your post....

From what I gather, bros travelling out of the US to LOS spend an average of USD$600 - USD$1000 (depending on the airline and where you are flying out from) to get to LOS.

To me it just does not make economical sense just to stay for 7 days and go home.....

For me on the other hand, coming from Singapore only costs me USD$110 (return) to fly to LOS...even though I stay for 5-7 days its still worth it considering the cost and that I'm 2hrs 20mins away

I arrive again in LOS in 12 days and this time my flight only cost me USD$40 (return) through a special promotion.

IMHO if you are gonna spend that much of $$$ paying for your flight, you might as well increase the budget to sustain you for at least 2 weeks in LOS.

1st visit was 2 1/2 weeks. Now I spend about 3 1/2 weeks every visit. Unlike most others have no work commitments due to retirement.
