I am travelling to Thailand with a couple of friends at the end of August, and we plan on splitting time between Bangkok and Pattaya.
I have heard recently that the U.S. Navy shores in Pattaya for a couple of weeks every year. I would imagine that this would make Pattaya a little too crowded for my tastes.
Is this true and if so, does anyone know when this happens?
I searched this site for info and didn't see anything, forgive me if I missed it.

the only time that they know the schedule and actually announce it is for Cobra Gold, the joint US/TH training excercises.
and if you're there and the Navy is too, just go to Soi Yodsak, none of them there...
they also aren't very welcome in many establishments. Find out which these are.
and if you're still not having fun, move to Nana Hotel (BKK)

Cobra Gold occurs in May every year. Although some units linger on into June. It does get crowded but I've never heard of any serious problems arising as in marines assaulting tourists. When I was in Okinawa, the Marines usually only fought each other. If that happens just stay clear and you'll be alright.
Expect short time hotels to fill up as most service people have to be on the boat or back to Utapao by a certain time. For entertainment watch the marines who think they know how to fight 1 on 1 sober, get drunk and then try challange a Thai boxer in the ring. Usually their buddies goad them into this. Guess who wins?
But in August the only service members there are those taking their own leave and your biggest worries are fat Europeans taking up too much room on the baht buses.
