Hi guys, I am no stranger to this forum nor BKK for that matter having been there once before. But my question is this. I want to send clothes back home using shipping that will take like 50-60 days so it doesnt cost so much. Is this easy to do arrange in Bangers? I dont want to use Fedex as it will get there in a couple of days and cost like US$100+ for 10-15kgs. Thanks guys - I am looking to send back suits etc. Liam

Liam, If you arrange airshipment in BKK with a freight forwarder or agent, (plenty companies around) it should not be more than 5USD/kg. I not familiar with shipping to the US of A, as I've only been shipping to Europe so far. (approx. 3 USD/kg) shark68

Did you ask your tailor? They might know about the best way to ship. You might also consider buying some cheap luggage and checking it on your flight if you under the weight limit for the baggage you already have. Watch out for customs duty either way you ship.

Another option is to send it loose cargo where you pay by the m3. On top of this comes all sorts of documentation charges, tea money etc. that may make it more expensive for a small quantity.

If you shipping to the USA watch out for duties. On incoming clothes these can be very high. They will assume the items are for resale.

I am in the logistics business, and would NOT recommend shipping clothing to the US as a freight consignment. The Customs regulations governing importation of fabric/apparel are complex (duty e.g. is driven by type of fabric finish, thread count, etc). Cotton items (or items containing cotton) are particularly notorious. Carry your purchases with you, even if you end up paying for excess baggage. Trust me - it will save you a lot of grief.

It is not a "hard time," it is just the import duties that are owed. If you bring stuff back with you (in checked luggage or carry on) there is an $800 exemption before import duties start to kick in. Other countries have similar import duty laws (in fact USA import duties are usually among the lowest in the world). One may be able to escape paying import duties if the shipment contents description and stated value are falsified. Of course, if the contents description and value are falsified, and the package is inspected by Customs, one might encounter more problems than just paying the duties owed.

Used personal effects - If it is shipped thus, it is duty exempt. For it to qualify (even from inspection) it has to be worn once. So wear em - pack em away and ship em. Take as much of the new stuff as you can in your luggage and leave as much of the worn stuff in your shipping. 95%of stuff that goes through customs is automatically 'green lighted' - ie no check, no check on paper work etc, the other 5% is 'orange light' - paper work checked, out of that a very small proportion is 'red-lighted' - Opened and checked. A tiny proportion of these are checked on a random basis, most are opened when something doesnt seem right to the customs guys. THey are not looking for someone trying to take in a few suits without paying duty. Costs to the US are approx 120 USD pre metre cubed, or you can pay by the kg.
