I will be coming to BKK 1st time in October. I was reading some posts and understood their are tier pricing for tourists and locals. I'm a tourist but I fit into the category that Thais would consider local due to my skin color. What are the pros' opinions on this issue. If I can pass for a local, should I play their game? Thanks for the info.

The surcharge is usually only a small amount, 200 to 300Baht (500 max?) and only in a small quantity of places, mainly the high end MP's. The TG's in the Falang areas (Nana, Cowboy etc) dont I believe ask less for a local! Pretending to speak Thai & posing as a local is not a good way to start your visit!

Right on, DrL.  I suppose you could even keep your arms inside your shirt, grasp a cup in your mouth and beg for change on the sidewalk to help pay for your stay.
Seriously though, the two-tier pricing scheme is just not that big of a deal to me. Those who have more pay more, and LOS is a long way from becoming anything close to expensive for those who earn western salaries. I try to avoid paying more than I have to, and bargaining can be a lot of fun, but there has yet to be a service in LOS I was unable to receive simply because I couldn't afford it. The idea of putting any serious effort into avoiding the farang charge just seems silly to me. In the grand scheme of things, you're already getting a great deal. Don't let a few measly baht get in the way of just enjoying yourself.
EDIT: The one farang surcharge I do try to avoid at all costs is the "sponsor" surcharge, which runs an incredible 100%. If all you want is somebody to be there to greet you when you arrive on your next trip, then do like BigD does and just pick the same girl across multiple visits. There's really no need for sponsorship in this day and age. If a girl truly wants to change her life, she'll get the ball rolling on her own without any direct help from us. Those who wish to help out can donate to a worthy NGO and know that they played role of benefactor far better than most any direct sponsorship ever could.
