Hi Guys I will be in Bangkok on 22 to 28 Sep, and coming back 3 weeks later after a tour of Vietnam with two old vets. As we agther in Bangkok hope to have a bit of fun, and have taken afew tips from the postings. A few questions * How do I get my electric toothbrush to charge, what are standrads for the power Jacks in Thailand and Vietnam v Australia? (Sorry if this sounds pretentious, but I need an electric toothbrush because of my peridontal treatment, cant do it the manual way) * Is it better to get travellers cheques or bring cash, US or Aussie dolars, or what proportions? * Is it worth getting a mobile phone, should I bring one from Oz, I will need to call the ex and the kids, should I just call from public phones etc I'm happy to catch up with some Oz/Pom/Kiwi/German or other english speaking blokes to share my duty free and take some tips. Will be staying at the a the Majestic. Cheers Blind

I bring TC, good old USD and ATM and credit cards. I use the TC for emergency backup.. I was in country 67 up in Phu Bai and Saigon 72, 73. I went back to Saigon in 01 and it was like stepping into a time warp. Many shops offer overseas calls for cheap price.

Blind Here are my thoughts from a fellow aussie Buy the adaptor at the airport or duty free store before leaving. The cheaper option maybe to buy in bkk like pantip or mbk. Electric toothbrush will see you through a good number of days before a recharge. Power standard is the same in thailand as oz - thats why you only need an adapter. Don't know about Vietnam....never been there (one day maybe). You get a good exchange rate for TC, but I can't be bothered with that and just bring cash over. I bring about $2,000 oz dollars and make sure you exchange when you get to bkk (either in full or just $1000). Don't change in Australia, better rate in LOS. Also, on way back to Australia, change back to oz dollars before leaving. I don't know why you would want US dollars - double conversion.... Aussie dollar is just as good. Credit card or savings withdraws - withdraw the maximum amount you can (About 20-30k baht from memory). I use Westpac and can use savings as well as mastercard at just about any ATM I've seen. The bank will charge you twice - one for an overseas transaction and the second for foreign currency conversion. As long as you can secure your cash while you are there (no wallet in the back pocket or front of shirt) and just take a max of about 6000 baht on you (unless you are going shopping - then stash smaller amounts around your body). Take you mobile with you and you'll be ok. If you don't have one - buy one in MBK (Just know what you want - too many options otherwise). If you already have one just bring that. You won't need to unlock it unless you are in a phone contract with a mobile provider. Go to MBK and get a sim card starter. I use orange, but some guys will recommend others. When you run out of credits, stop at any 7-11 and buy a recharge card - just like you would in oz with a prepaid phone. Don't use international calling on your oz sim - it will cost a fortune. As you are staying at the Majestic - me thinks you have done a little research already

I have been out bush the last week, so did not get a chance to respond. Anyhow thanks for the advice, BigD and Isee. I have got the drift, seems best just to take Aussie Dollars, TCs and I will take my CC. Dont want to carry too much cash around, but using the card for cash seems a bit of a sting, though it is probably ok for $1000 hit I guess. I will have a look at what is up and see about catching up with a members meeting, I have a few days before my mates turn up. BigD, both my mates were in 1 RAR did their tours in 69/70 I think, based in Vung Tau. Me I was a bit too young, thank God I guess, Oz pulled our troops out in late 70, and Gough Whitlam pulled the plug totally in 71. They have never been back, and they are a bit leery about bringing back the old memories. Still, these days Vietnam Vets in Oz are pretty well respected, which was not the case when they came back, it was a friggin disgrace the way they were treated. Anyway, Cheers all.....!
