Hey guys,
I am thinking seriously about doing some small scale importation of some Thai products into the US. I would like to get a bunch of the Nang Talung carvings. I knew of these before as Buffalo hide carvings and now I have learned that they are called Nang Talung which is the leather shadow puppets used in traditional shows.
There is a non puppet version of the same art that makes for great wall hangings.
Anyhow, this is what I would like to buy in quantity on my next trip. I have found some BKK and Phuket sources but they are charging retail prices and I am seeking REAL wholsale pricing. ALSO...I suspect that these are not"painstakingly hand carved over weeks and months" but rather many of them are simply stamped out on some sort of press. If they are retailing these for $20 there must be a REAL inexpensive source for these that I would like to tap into.
Any bros have any suggestions or connections that could help me out??
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

To get buffalo skin carvings you need buffalo to die. And as it seems that most TBG's buffalo get sick and expire with alarming regularity, they would probably be the ones to talk to on sourcing matters.

If you are serious at getting the best price, forget bangkok, forget Phuket.
Go and buy in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, it is the traditional craft down there and the home of 'Nang Talung'.
And it's got the best looking girls in Thailand in my opinion.

My research suggests that you are correct that place is "ground zero" so to speak for the art but what I am looking for is a connection with the REAL manufacturers of these items. I need to some how break thru the Falang tourist retail pricing structure and tap into the source. Sounds like that area mayb e the right place to start at least. THX
CCvvbb: I can understand some issues with Teak export but all woods??

Shame I am not in Thailand.
I would get you right to the source.
Try a place on the road from Amphur Muang to Cha Mao.
That's the best I can do without being there.
Also the 'Master' of Nang Talung reside close to Wat Phra Mahatahat which ids on the same road between the town and 'Hua Thanon' or as the locals call in 'Hua Non'
Again without being there that's the best I can do.
I'll make further enquiries though if you'd like, but from afar it's not so easy.

Yurune, Do you have any idea if they are all handmade as advertised or is there a source that stamps a lot of these out via press or die? I have seen some that are too exact of matches to be other than machine stamped.
Any further info you could provide without knocking yourself out would be appreciated.

The truthful answer is I do not know for sure, but I am told they are all handmade.
You have to remember that Thai's are masters at copying things and you can easily get a team producing identical items. Manual labour is one hell of a lot cheaper than an expensive machine, particularly in a rural area like NST.

Careful when saying talung...don't want to mispronounce and say thalung...which means rude or obscene. Nang being performance...puppets for rude performance...LOL....though the actual word for a porn movie would be Nang Boh.
