Silver preferably 925.
Where is the best place to get it?
BKK?
Issan?
Cambodia?
Burma?
There is an electric pen that detects the quality and if in fact it is silver and not aluminium. It is obviously easier to use than bottled acids?
Can one buy this pen in LOS ?
How about buying silver and having the Thais make it into something to your specification?

Best, cheapest, place to buy is in Myanmar (Burma). Good quality.

I thought Burma could be a bit dangerous to visit with its military government ?
Export problems ??
I saw the pen advertised on a website somewhere. Not as accurate as acid but worked quite well. I think it cost about 25$. Can't find the site again?

If you want block silver get it in Burma, made up, Chiang Mia's silver street is good. Some very simple tests:-
Chlorine (household bleach) will turn silver black.
Buy a chain and file it down to see if it is silverall the way through.
Cut a chain open and Bleach it, should be black all the way through.
When buying block, go for 93-93.5 if you can get it, as assyas differ, and you dont want to be on the line foir 925 when assayed in the West.

Burma (now Myanmar) was fine in the late 90's, doubt it has changed much, more tension then. Was very safe to travel around compared to Cambodia. I bought Rubies at a "Government" Store, had them checked by reputable Jewellers in the Australia and all were real!

Know a guy who is going every week to Myanmar to buy silver. He sells it in Thailand and makes a living with this. He is pretty cool about it.

if you don't want to travel to burma there are plenty of silver shops around the oriental hotel in bkk. all of them offer superior pricings compared to the west!
