Hi,

I'm planning for a New Years visit...

Can any one provide info about what the prices/brands available are for Champagne/Sparkling wine in BKK...

Are there local products?  What are they like?  and what are BG's reaction to Champagne  (ok stupid question )

30 days and counting...

saddic,
I am no wine expert, but, my first thought would be to buy something Duty Free on my trip over. You can at least get 2 bottles. good luck.

wine prices are prohibitive here! i usually take about 15 bottles with me to store it in my fridge here every time i come back to thailand.
the price for a decent sprakling wine would be around thb 1,500, champagne would be thb 3,000. decent wines start from about thb 1,000 upwards.
another problem buying wine here is that it is mainly not properly stored. so with the heat you will find many bottles wasted already. so better bring your own stuff with you, not only cheaper but you also know that is properly stored before!

ah, forget to mention the brands available usually are the usual suspects like moet & chandon, veuve cliquot, pommery and heidsieck.
usually tg like to drink something exquisite and expensive like champagne but some of them actually do not like the taste as it is to dry and not sweet enough for them. actually had some girls trying to mix champagne with cola before or trying to enhance it with sugar!  aarrhhh!

griffin is spot on the prices.  You can find decent enough stuff at Villa or maybe Emporium supermarket, but at 2x-3x western prices.  I brought a couple of bottles of decent stuff my last couple of trips, and then made some parties in my hotel room (at Majestic Suites).  Had a very nice time.  The girls seemed to enjoy the champagne I'd brought (I think it was Ruinart).  One nice thing was I was able to "borrow" enough glasses from the service bar in the lobby.

Duty free is better than buying in country, but not as cheap as bringing directly yourself.

Can I ask a related question?

If I buy liquor (specifically scotch) at Foodland, and it is marked say, 1,000 THB, do I pay tax on top of that?

The reason for my question is I paid 1,290 THB for 1L 12 yr. Glenfiddich at the arrival duty free shop at BKK, and then noticed it was 1,249 THB at Foodland!

lomatopo: You pay whatever is shown on the price tag. No more. Yeah, the duty free, is not profit free.
