I'm looking to purchase a few electronics items like PDA, Digital Camera or Cell phone in BKK.  I assume prices are cheaper in BKK than in Hong Kong or Japan.

But do shops here have new models as fast as Hong Kong?  Any recommendation of where to shop for these?

Cell phones are definitely not cheap here. You are better off getting them in HK or Singapore.

digital cameras are actually cheaper by a few bucks - to buy where you are at. cell phones are hella expensive. even memory sticks. so get it before you get here.

or try hongkong. somethings japan electronics there are actually cheaper than japan! and it is the real deal. has to do with import taxes or something.BK could probably clarify.

JJ,

I bought a FUJI 2600Z a couple of months ago and am
really satisfied. I bought after reading reviews on the Web. It has 2MegaPixels.

Search for 'FUJI 2600Z reviews' at Google or so to read some.

I paid THB 14,995 including a 32Mb card. Bought an additional 128Mb card for THB 4,000 baht.

It has USB upload (really easy). Doesn't have a lot of rings and bells, but does the job well.

Thanks BK for your advice about cell stuff, I'll stay away from them.  The newest Nokia is 7650, very good looking, selling for 4000 HKD (500 USD) in HK.

As for digital camera, I kind of like the Canon S230 best.  This is a brand spanking new model, just released in US a few days ago).  It's very compact in the size of a normal Canon APS camera.  I was going to to buy a Canon S30.  But now prefer the S230 compactness.  The S230 does have a USB cable that let things come into computer.  You can also purchase a memory reader.

I  bouught a MindStor digital wallet.  The thing lets me transfer stuff from media card into HD that's inside the device.  Fedex should be delivering it on Monday for me.

Hmm, 4000 Baht for a 128 MB card, I've seen some cheaper price in Canada for CF.   Just now I witnessed a 128 MB CF goes for $36 USD on ebay.  I think media prices are too high in LOS.

From long experience, my advice is not to bring dedicated 110-120V appliances/gadgets to Thailand (where of course we have 220V). No matter how many step down transformer you have sooner or later some idiot is going to plug your box into a 220V mains and WHAM it will be toast.

So unless you have an auto-switching devioce such as most notebook or laptop computers, which are safe on either mains, don't go this route.

Incidentally I have some 220V devices that work quite well on 110-120V, I have discovered this by making the same mistake in reverse. This is stupid but not fatal to the device in question.

As someone pointed out, decent stepdown transformers are HEAVY and as capacity (in KVA, or KW) goes up so does weight. I have a 3 KVA one that is MUCH bigger and heavier than a 2 KVA model.

The small transformers that are sold for travellers are VERY limited in capacity, they are good for running an electric shaver for 5 minutes but not intended for heavy or continuous use. Better to get a battery powered shaver...

Mains power in Thailand also is notoriously unstable, can vary +/- 15-20%, has a lot of peaks and spikes and brownouts.

And almost NOTHING is grounded (earthed) so BE CAREFUL.

A typical residential circuit is 220V 50Hz 15 Amps and that's 3.3KVA or about twice what a typical N.Americal home circuit carries.

Hi Oily

Somewhat off topic, and somewhat late but .....

Being in Oz we have a 240 volt power supply, so out gadgets work fine in LOS, which I will be in  again next month.

However, on the same trip I will be coming back via the U.S.A.  Will me electric work there? (I assume it would be the same as taking Thai good there.

It is only a phone/camera/PDA charging issue, nothing heavier than that.

Have you any idea if I can charge them>

Thanks muchly

Thanks for the good advice.  You may have saved me some big bucks in preventing me from frying some of my "gadgets".
