I'll be in Bangkok in four weeks and was wondering if anyone could give me some information on where to buy a guitar. I'm looking for a decent instrument and not something that you'd buy for a child to learn on.
Thanks.

Mr Alan
There are some musical instrument shops along Atsadang (not too far from the Old Clock Tower near the river).

Also try the Chatuchak Weekend Market, Sections 23-24.

If that doesn't work, there was guy performing in the lobby of the Times Square Building (next to Sheraton) last 2 times I was in BKK (he has a shaved head and plays western popular music). I don't remember if he played the guitar, but I bet he would know if you can catch him on a break. Don't know if he is still there, but he is very talented.

Lastly, you can contact the Bangkok Guitar Society:

I am not quite sure what kind of guitar (acoustic/electric) or in what price range you want to buy, but the following shops are recommended:

(electric)
Hollywood Street Center (opposite Asia Hotel on Phaya Thai Road, Rathawee BTS stop)
The Mall Bangkapi (I think 3rd floor)

(acoustic)
World Trade Center (now called Zen), 4th floor

Dr. Love, do you have any idea what the price range will be in these stores. I already have ten guitars here in LA, and really just want something to play while in LOS. I would love to find a deal on a classical nylon string, however, I suspect that it would be cheaper here in the states. On the other hand, a friend of mine just returned from China with a steel string acoustic that also had a pickup installed. It cost him only $30. I was quite surprised at how decent it was for the money. So I was wondering if the same thing is possible in Thailand.
By the way, thanks for the addresses, I will definitely check them out.

Prices as low or as high as you want....

A simple guitar sets you back around 500 baht (Chatuchak Market) while a some Martin models go for over 200,000 baht.

I suspected that might be the case. I have no plans to buy a Martin and I daren't pick one up in case I fall in love with it. Guitars are like women, just when you think you've found the right one that fits you perfectly, along comes another to steal your heart and wallet away. I'll probably end up spending a short time with one of the cheaper models.

Depending upon how much time you have and how much rummaging around you want to do, you could also pick up a decent axe at Emporium on the top floor. It will not be the cheapest price available in town, but it can't be beat for convenience....

Guys,

any idea of the going rate for a Fender Telecaster is in LOS?

I was planning on getting one from Japan next trip, and I generally manage a stop over in BKK on the way, and I never considered the option of getting one there.

I am happy enough with a Japanese Fender rather than a squire, and a US or Mexi model is not so important for me, I am no expert.

thanx in advance, Jnr

There is a quasi-music store on the second floor of Pantip Plaza that has had 7-10 acoustic instruments of varying quality every time I stopped by. They also sell pro audio, photo and some electronic parts. It's roughly at 1 o'clock facing away from the entrance.

There is a couple of higher-end music instrument stores in the Ploen Chit area: one on the 4th floor of the World Trade Center, in the northern corner (away from Zen), and the other -- on the 3rd floor of Gaysorn Plaza. The one in WTC has some serious guitar wood -- including custom-made.

Overall though, I found Bangkok to be on the lame side in terms of quality and variety of guitars for sale (I collect nylon acoustics) -- Seoul is much better, IMHO.

Cheers,
-PB
