Well, I never fail to have a few custom suits and shirts made each and every time I'm in BKK. They're very affordable. However, the prices really do depend on the type of material that you select. The only place I patronize is one of several that were mentioned in the "Lonely Planet" guidebook on BKK. I'm sure that there are other equivalent places, but I keep going back to these guys because I'm very happy with their quality, customer service, and reasonable (to me) prices. The store's name is "Alla Moda" and they are at 232 Siam Center (2nd floor of the Siam Center, phone number is 2-658-1093). Very easy to get to because all BTS Skytrains stop right there since it is their major interchange. The proprieter is Mr. Pal, a Sikh who speaks fluent English and Thai. They can copy anything, since just about all the suits they've made for me were done from my own personal sketches - they're true "originals" in every sense of the word. As for the gold buttons, well, on the sport coats that they've done for me, I've insisted on subtle buttons that blend into and complement the color and shade of the coat. No "bright" buttons for me! Bear in mind that a well-tailored suit does require several fittings to get a true custom fit on your physique so make sure that you leave yourself time in your schedule to make repeated visits to the tailor. Since I'm usually there for 10-14 day stints, that's not a problem, but it would appear that your time there is somewhat limited. Be sure to mention your schedule to whichever tailor you decide to patronize to ensure that they can meet your deadlines. I always tell them to take their time since I want things to be absolutely perfect and I don't want to rush things unnecessarily.

Not a problem at all. They have tons and tons of pattern books for you to pick from. Also, if you happen to walk in with the latest issue of "GQ" and have pictures that they can work from, they'll make it happen. These guys are really good.

In the many years in Thailand I have only used two tailors Raja's in Soi Nana and Perrys on Silom, my last suits have all come from Raja and he gets my vote. Added advantage is that he is right opposite the Nana Hotel and adjacent to the entrance to Nana Plaza so those extra fittings which are the key to a good result need not interupt your partying!

mt and oldhand thanks for the feedback. Bearing in mind that the fabric costs could be quite variable and styles cause different prices, what kind of ballpark price range are we talking? And, how many fittings over how many days usually?

One other thing. I used to be a big Armani fan, came to Hawaii and there really wasn't any point. Great too because the cost is staggering. But now, I've got a Bangkok tailor on my side and ready to dust off my game plan. Question: Given that Armani's fabrics are a BIG part of the quality you're putting on, like other 'best' names in fashion, can your tailors access the premium fabric on a seasonal basis?

Have had several suits, tuxedo, slacks, etc. made at Raja's (Soi Nana, across from Hotel Nana). Great quality, and good price. Cannot wear wool, so Raja has come through on some really great, high quality look-alikes. He has piles of photo books and can copy most anything -- the Tux he made was really nice, and fits like a glove.

The variation in the cost of a suit really is about the material, if you pay a reasonable price for the fabric you donot want some SOB stuffing it up for the sake of THB1,000-2,000. A REAL Armani fabric is going to translate into a price of at least THB15,000 to THB20,000 an extra pair of strides add another THB5,000. More suites & shirts might bring the price down. Recommendation get yourself down to Raja ask for Bobby and make your own choice - this tailor has a great reputation

Thanks oldhand! I know your right, and I will just as soon as I land. Last question: strides = trousers, yes? Gotta be right, don't bother. Thanks again.

Getting the good, high-end fabrics isn't a problem. That's available. I'm a big fan of light-weight wool fabric by Armani and Louis Vuitton as they drape very well and they exude quality, and the store I patronize usually has the material I'm looking for. The material does add to the cost but I feel that the added investment is worth it.

I had some pants made a Raja a few years ago. They grew impatient with my multiple fittings. Although the pants came out great in the end, their bad attitude has assured I will not return.
