anyone know how much is the avg price of a used mobile phone in thailand ? let say popular nokia brands ... model 8310, 8250, 8210 or 6510 ... etc ...

Nokia used phones sold as follows w/o sim card
(all depends on conditions of course, and where
you buy it. Prices could go a little higher or lower
than the price range below) :
1. 8210 - between Baht 4-5K
2. 8250 - between Baht 5-6K
3. 8310 - between Baht 8-9K
4. 6510 - between Baht 7-8K

I bought a used Nokia 8210 (no SIM) for 3000bht at MBK, it was red, slim and very girly (OK - at least the antenna didnt light up when it rang). It was fine for me because I am only in BKK once in a while and don't need a fancy new phone, I went with my steady and she brokered a deal (got them to knock 800bht off). Coincidently that night, I was carrying her mobile because her pants were too tight and she couldn't fit anything in her pockets (what a sight) and I lost hers in a taxi. When we went to get her a new one, I suggested a used one and she was horrified at the thought.

you can use them globaly and on the GSM nets in the USA and Canada. Basically you get a global phone just with restrictions in the USA and Canada due to the american systems are a bit outdated!

This is NOT true.
1) If you buy a TRI-BAND phone (check the model), you can use it in the US/Canada, Asia, and Europe. I think Australia uses the same FREQUENCIES as most of Europe. Most OLDER phone models from Nokia are DUAL-BAND, and will not work in the US. Almost ALL of the newer Nokias ate TRI-BAND.
2) The system we are talking about is GSM, but it has 3 distinct frequency bands, depending on service provider and country. In the US, it is 1900 MHz. In Thailand, it is 900MHz for AIS, and 1800MHz for DTAC. Tri-band GSM phones operate on 900/1800/1900MHz, and will work with the SIM from the vendor in the country where you will use it.
3) As for the US system being old, the problem is more one of competing systems. GSM lags behind, but is gaining fast, due to it's superior data capabilities. CDMA, which is Qualcomm's system HAD some early advantages in battery life, and is being aggressively marketed in Asia, but IMHO is a crummy system in practical use.
Anyway, to answer your question: buy a tri-band phone, aka 'World phone', and use it just about anywhere.

Want to get some up to date info on the mobile phones. This time around, I'd like to buy one of these used mobile phones. From what I can gather, MBK is the place? What about Panthip?
Just need a cheap phone. Probably prefer a tri band so that I can use it around Asia (except of course Japan)
Up to date info? I'll go grab one as soon as I land.

Just near Nana a Jaymart has opened, selling used phones - Nokia 3310, 8250, 4-5,000 bht - should be useful to some guys.
