Wang Burapha (in Chinatown) is a gunshop area and I have seen those in there.
In Pattaya streetvendors have that stuff.
ASK THE LOCAL LAWS FROM YOUR TG.
Do not try to smuggle one for Yourself to back home unless you want a shitload of troubles.

btw I checked under every fridge in every hotel room in BKK... no mace... only tons of passports and heaps of wallets!

Of all the "personal protection devices" available, mace/pepper spray is an excellent option. Using spray in a purly defensive action is not usually treated as a criminal act and the effects are long lasting. This time will give you an excellent opportunity to depart in haste. The more intoxicated someone is, the less effect spray has on them, but it will give them a jolt each time, it just doesn't last as long.
Most common problem with spray is misaiming it. You must make sure you aim it away from you. A stiff wind in your face is the other big problem.

Also try to get one that comes out more as a stream than an aerosal. Less chance to get the cloud back in your face.

Make sure you get OC spray (oleoresin capsicum often called pepper spray) as it is a LOT more effective than mace which is generally CS gas or tear gas.

I've resurrected this thread because my GF was mugged by a bastard taxi driver in Thonglor this morning. He drove her into a subsoi, roughed her up a little bit, grabbed her bag from her and took the 1400 baht from her purse before pushing her out and driving away.
Given recent media reports about taxi rapes, she got off lightly. She's not hurt, but I am one angry sonofabitch right now.
The police, of course, are f***ing useless.
If anyone knows a reliable source of mace or pepper spray or has any updated information on this thread, much appreciated.
