Do becareful when you buy the cheap VCDs. Make sure you see "Thai Subtitle" (ban-yaay thai). If you are not sure ask the sales person to ensure you get the original soundtrack, as there are many Thai dubbed versions. Got caught with a few.

Question....bought several DVD's today at Panthip for 150 each.   Checked out the originals at around 289 but they are only for Thailand (zone 3 I think) so won't work back in the U.S. as far as I know.   I was also offered something called a DVD 9 and was told it was better quality for 250 baht.   Can anyone explain how these are different than the regular ones they sell at 150?

One more try... hopefully some DVD expert lurking around the board.  I'm going shopping again today.  The question..... what exactly is DVD9?  This is compared to the regular copy DVD's they selll at Panthip.   Unfortunately, I don't speak Thai and nobody could speak enough English to explain to me why it's worth my money to pay 250.   Happy to spend it, just want to know what it is.  Perhaps I'll just have to buy both and compare when I get home.

DVD9 is for dual layer DVDs which offer a capacity of 9GB, hence the name. Other DVDs are DVD5, so 5 GB only...

You are supposed to get a better picture quality with a DVD9 and there is also more room for extras/additional soundtracks and so on.

thanks FIB, that makes sense.   All the DVD's are rated 'ALL' for all DVD players so had that hurtle passed.    Where I'm still a bit unsure is that assuming that the entire movie fits on a 5GB disk and all the data is there, what then would be the difference.  Unlike tape, data is data.... right?   It's either there or not there.    One movie that I bought that I'm especially curious about is Lord of the Rings.  This is a 3+ hour long movie and wonder if it's all there or not.   I wonder if leave out some of the surround soundtrack etc. when craming onto a single layer 5GB disk.

Yes, you usually gets DTS and stuff like this only on DVD9.

AFAIK, anything new nowadays comes out on DVD9 only, including LOTR.

Interesting.  I bought the following at 150 baht each

Matrix
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars II attack of the clones
The Grinch
Eagles Hell Freezes over

I have a DVD player here at the hotel and checked them.   the movies all seem OK but lack the extra features mostly.  That's OK.  Not sure if they have DTS, but all work on dolby digital.  I think the player/setup I have here does not have DTS so can't check.   I was worried that the Lord of the Rings would not all be there but it seems to be.  I thought DVD5 only held about 133 minutes of movie.   The Eagles DVD is crap.  The voices don't match the picture in some cases..... overall picture and sound is good but wonder if this is one of those that needs to be DVD9 to have it be worthwhile.

Curious if you FIB or others know if the selections I've made are OK in the DVD5 or definitely should consider getting DVD9 for some?  I.e., LOTR.   Oh, and anyone know if concert DVDs container more info or somehow need the dual layered format to work????

dolby is ok in DVD5. Most probably, the disc that you had were ripped from DVD9, using enough compression to make it fit on a DVD5. But that's lossy compression so you do lose somewhat on the image quality (sound should still be ok). At standard compression rate a DVD5 holds 133' and a dvd9 holds 240'.

Sometimes it happens that the ripping/compression process loses the synchro between image and sound, if wrong settings are chose, which is what seems to happen with the Eagles disc.

Is it worth watching any of the mentionned titles in dvd9 ? Well, on your set, can you see or hear the difference in quality between dvd5 and dvd9 and does it matter to you ? for me, the answer is yes, at least for lotr and sw2.

Last week I went to Penang and prices are cheaper than in Thailand.

DVD5 for THB 65 / DVD9 THB 140 / VCD THB 55

Plus the advantage that they'll play it for you most shops.

Heard that Pantip now also have some shops where you can try before you buy.

In Malaysia they also campaign against piracy with the follolwing slogan:

'Watching illegal DVDs and VCDs can hurt youreyesight'

That might deter them  ..... LOL
