Just like to say thanks to you all for the very valuable info'. I've bought "cheap packages" costing $xxx and ended up sorry, so thanks for steering me towards Raj et al. Incidentally, when you guys talk/write about how good wool is, is that from a sheep, goat or what? Cheers

AHHH, now I really understand the second pair of trousers concept! It reminds me of a friend who toured WanChai bars in HK one night. Got back just in time to change a shirt and go to a breakfast meeting. During the meeting, he moves the linen napkin from his lap only to see a nice "snail trail" of where the bargirl, sans panties, had been grinding him only a few hours earlier. He had a helluva time standing up at the end of that breakfast!!

Ah the happy days of the Wanchai warrior and the all night sessions. Doesn't happen in Thailand unfortunately. The buggers want you sober and clean smelling in the mornings. How about reversible pants? One side for whoring, one side for respectable office work? I must mention it to my tailor. Brocher, You're welcome. Ten out of ten sheep will tell you their wool is best. A cashmere / wool blend is also very good.

Thanks for the info guys. I am looking for a nice suit next visit. Stayed clear last time althrough I was desperate for one, but I did not know what I was doing. Think thats good advice there. Anyway, a question I have; do these tailors send suits back to the uk by post so I don't have to carry the damn thing? Also do they charge for this and would there likely to be a customs charge from the blighty HMCE suits. Sonofsam2

I can only really speak for Rajawongsee but they will happily take your orders over the internet / fax / telephone and send them DHL to your home address. Obviously your measurements need not to have changed since the last time they measured you (most men get larger and more prosperous as they mature) I would not be 100% in favour because I want the fitting and final adjustments to be done before finishing. You may find teh trousers are 10mm too tight or too loose etc. There is of course a charge because they have to post it to you. How much I cannot really say as I only send small parcels to UK by DHL. Import duties are very low in UK on textiles. Check with your local Customs but I would guess 5% or 10%. Not so sure the buggers would bother with one suit in a DHL bag. Payment can be made by TT but the charge is about 15GBP depending on your bank. If you are going on the same plane as your suit then you can hand carry and the stewie will hang it up for you. Most tailors provide free suit carriers with every suit so it is not like you have to buy a new suitcase. As a cost and value proposition I would rate it well compared to buying on the UK high street despite the long wait and the hassle.

Quote: from BKK Banger on 4:38 pm on Aug. 4, 2004 Agree with you Jack but washability remains an issue when your maid has a big brush and a determination to get out all stains and dirt, regardless.
Oh yeah, like mine that decided that all of my shirts from Thailand needed to be washed hot, after all, there are no other temperatures (these were cheap-ass shirts, which are now X-small, and unusable. She was close to getting fired. Harry

Quote: from chickengeorge on 9:47 pm on Aug. 1, 2004 Good stuff. Thanks -If you buy tailored shirts... Always get a split yoke (or shoulder), a single piece of fabric across the shoulders is the stuff of cheap outlets like Matalan...and some tailors will incredibly give you a single shoulder piece unless you ask.
Sorry but never having bought a tailored shirt before, what exactly is a split yoke? Also is it enough for me to just tell my tailor that I would like a split yoke shirt? Thanks.

ahhh thanks go a little bit of googling, I found my answer: What are the hallmarks of a quality dress shirt? While many dress shirts seem similar from across an office desk, closer inspection will reveal the minor details that make a major difference in the look and life expectancy of this crucial element of a man‘s wardrobe. Whether it‘s a spread-collar poplin with French cuffs or a button-down broadcloth, there are a handful of giveaways for a well-made dress shirt. The quality of the cloth. You want something that feels good to the touch. Split-yoke detailing. The yoke of a shirt is the fabric that comes over the shoulders and is attached to the back piece with a horizontal seam. A split yoke—a hallmark of custom-made shirts—has a perpendicular seam at the halfway point between the shoulder blades, an attractive detail that requires some costly extra stitching, but proves the shirtmaker cared enough to preserve a classic symbol of quality. Single-needle stitching. Using two parallel needles simultaneously will cut production time significantly, but the lines are rarely matched perfectly, and the difference will cause the shirt seams to ripple after washing. The single-needle method, using only one needle at a time to make one seam, consumes more thread and takes more time, but creates a stronger, more natural-looking bind. On Polo Ralph Lauren shirts you‘ll find an acknowledgement of single-needle stitching. Miscellaneous details. Are the sleeves set into the shirt and well sewn? Is the front placket, where the button holes are located, sewn onto the shirt as a separate piece? That‘s better than one that‘s just folded over. Are the cuffs sewn in separately? And perhaps the quickest no-fail for testing a dress shirt: hold a button against your lip. Shirt buttons are made from either mother-of-pearl or plastic, and only mother-of-pearl (a foregone conclusion with the finest shirtmakers) will feel cold.
