Bingo,
Just remember, if you use any weapon it should either be able to take the target down in one shot or be able to be used for a sustained attack.
This rules out:
Stun Guns/Tazers of low voltage
Mace/Pepper Spray keyrings (single shot)
Small caliber pistols
(you get the point).
My preference is a shotgun with 00 Buck. If that is impractical then a 32 oz baseball bat does well. However, as you will be walking in public the collapsible baton sounds the best.

That would give you ample time to get the boot in or limp away as fast as you can....

My concern with pepper spray is that some police agencies are reporting that some criminals have developed a tolerance to pepper spray unless you get a hit in the eyes. It seems that like with any other chemical if you get hit enough you can overcome its effects...
BTW: Some juristictions list pepper spray as a weapon and require liscening to carry it. Best check local laws on this (although I do not believe that any have banned the carrying of a cricket bat yet).

You are clearly a man of my own ilk - as such, I'd recommend the stun gun - its hidden in a working flash light and can be carried openly in your hand. When activated in low light they look (and sound) scary and will buy you the "pause" you require. The advantage they have over pepper spray is that "shock" value and no harm done unless you make contact. Hate to pepper spray an over eager taxi driver......or would I? Enjoy
