I believe the added tax on motor size is actually based on "horse-power", I remember reading of BMW de-tuning one of its models to fall into the under 150HP tax catagory for Thailand.
Anyway Thailand will soon be flooded with Aussie cars  The new free trade deal will see us with a big advantage on the larger model cars.
If you ask me,, stick to HJonda or Toyota.
Here is the excise tax rate... this does not include other taxes such as tags and other notables so obviously the price will be higher...
to acheive the price for the Thai market for most cars here in thailand either mulitply the cost of the US made one (minus all the rebates and stuff) by 1.5 or 2 to achieve the price.... for imports (ones not built in any way shape or form here) like Porsche, Ferrari, Mazda RX8, or anything on the SEC Groups lot or even the aforementioned Audi S8 (although it could be a normal A8 with just a S8 bodykit) mulitply by 2.5 or higher....
take one note though... most of the cars you see here that match the ones in the states are not the same engine size... because I have never seen a Merc C200 or C180 (talk about baby benz)... but both being Kompressors will help you realize the understand the need for fuel at 95 octane compared to the states at 91 octane... small four cylinders that have high engine compression need this...

Hi NYC,
I had a Honda City when I lived over there, they dont even have them here in the States. Comparable to a small Honda Accord or big Civic.
I rented it for 12,000 baht a month and liked it so much I then bought a used one for 6,000 US.
Cars are $$ (pang make mak) over there, but I understand any thai with a decent job can get a car loan and that explains a large % of thais in benz's.

The ole City was a stripped down Civic. even stripped things like safety glass. The recent Hondas (and Toyota) are much more world class in feature. Although some modifications are made to take advanatge of the excise tax rules described above
