well...got back last month and brought back a mixed batch of about 60 T-shirts (Beer Chang/Singha/Red Bull/Thai Flag)....got all at JJ market for 70baht a piece...110 for 2XL... had to buy a big northface backpack to put them in, which will inturn be a cool christmas gift for my nephew the t's seem to have gone over very well with my friends/clients.... my advice is to pay a bit more for the 2XL shirts (unless it is for a woman) as they shrink up big time... didnt see any fisherman pants this trip...although I didnt really look hard for them....funny as they were everywhere you turned in the past.. got 5 cool switchblade type knives for clients that like camping/hunting (those got an amazing response) oh and one for pops for fathers day (he loved it)...got them from a street booth down near nana station for like 200 baht each.... oh and those little wooden buddha's seemed to have gone over well with clients I am not very close with..just as a thoughtful good luck souvenier.. atl

did T-shirts again this trip, got about 17 singha and 10 red bull's - price went way up! Tried something different for my female colleagues, I got these palm size, round mirrors (to throw in a purse) with nice decorations on both sides and a button you hit to flip it open, those have been going over great I loaded up on 'fridge magnets this time. They are really cool tuk tuks, temples, elephants etc and I have been amazed how well they have been going over with random clients/colleagues Also, I discovered these cool wooden business card boxes that flip open with buddha's painted on them, I got 5 of them for some clients and they were very well recieved Once again, I did not come across any fisherman pants Finally, I bought 3 bad ass switchblade hunting knives and mrs atl packed us both up and didn't know what was in the bag and put them in my carry on! Needless to say, I had quite a suprise when I went thru security at Bangkok airport! I was pissed at the time, but the story is worth the 700 baht I lost atl

... selecting gifts for poor upcountry Thais is quite easy... they will graciously appreciate anything you offer. ... I've had good luck giving Chinese tea imported from the old country... bought in Chinatown... fancy packaged... a nice nostalgic touch for the old folks, especially if they've any Chinese in the blood. ... after returning to the real world, you might have a good idea of their needs, and can mail them something practical as a thank you... blankets are always welcomed... mosquito nets... large floor mattresses... your girlfriend will have ideas. ... it's a big deal when a Thai takes a man back to the home village... it comes with expectations, and much village gossip... you do get that, right? ... if you really want to rattle the community and make a reputation for yourself, go for late night walks before bedtime through the local wat, amongst the chedis and ghosts... hopping, juking and jiving a bit as you stroll about, while listening to your tunes over the headphones will only add to your mystique, and their admiration/fear of the farang... make no fanfare about it, they will all know by morning what a studly farang you are... give 'em something to gossip about for months. ... and while there, do go to the temple and make a donation... big credit for the parents.

Food is always appreciated. A mixed fruit basket, in a usable basket, or anything like that. It's not always a good idea to bring alcohol though. Get a clothes backet at big C, and fill it with things. Let your tirak help you fill it. If there are kids, then bring some coloring books, and crayons, or those big chalks. Most people only bring the kids things for school, so think about when you were a kid, and how this went over with you...lolol. Think about anything you've ever seen people bringing home on the bus that they've bought, except live animals...hahaha.

... disagree on that whiskey idea, loco1... while papa might enjoy getting blasted out of his mind, mama, the children, your tilac, and the family dog might be less enthused about such a noble gesture as you getting him drunk. ... alcohol in many upcountry communities is not consumed in moderate measures... it's a problem that would not impart a best overall impression for a family visit. ... unless he is an alcoholic, he will not expect it... if he is an alcoholic, I wouldn't do it. ... toys for kids, practical things making their lives less misserable, donation to their wat will better show them you are jai dee ('good heart').

since we changed directions on this a bit (no worries, I like some of the posts) mrs atl and I brought an old laptop we had and were not using and gave it to her family along with a web cam, talk about a hit with the kids They have internet at the cousins house about 5 stilt houses down the road that they can skype with mrs atl and do internet stuff, but my brother in laws kids that live with my in-laws can still play games etc We did the Big C run and I dropped about 8 or 9000 baht on toys, crayons, games and shit they would never buy for themselves, but what they really got a kick out of was when I made Spagetti for like 12 people (cousins, in-laws etc) and bought 3 bottles of red wine. My father in law didnt like it but my mother in law had 2 cups and was feeling pretty nice, but my 25 year old bro-in-law and I killed the rest mags, I will try the wat donation next trip! atl
