its obviously a scam, the employee pockets the cash, and you run the risk of leaving a department store with no proof you have paid for your "purchase"

isnt this similar to what happened at the airport duty free, with the "free gift" then being taken as "stolen" later by the police and demanding a bribe to let you off

maybe they working in tandem with the mall security to extort more money as you cant actually prove you paid for anything?

Thanks magnum for interesting and detailed description of how these department stores operate. My gut feeling was that I would put myself in a great risk for really nothing if I accept the offer and therefore I declined.

I agree with snpark that this is similar to the infamous airport duty free scam and hope that no one falls for it.

That happened to me at Siam Paragon, I bought some CD's and said I wanted to add another CD to my selection. She took my money but didn't put the last CD on the receipt. I didn't notice til after I left the store and I'm sure she pocketed the money.

I think you'll find that store employees get a significant discount if they purchase any goods at their store. Therefore if you make a purchase, without a receipt, the employee can again buy the product at a discounted rate and pocket the difference.

... while I guess anything is possible here, the major department stores have heavily invested in preventing their own staff from stealing from them... keep in mind the culture of corruption here.

... were you accused of stealing, store security cameras could track you from outside the store, all the way through the store, through the transaction, and back out again... from multiple angles.

... I doubt the major department store's security is vulnerable to such a grand scam... the department stores have too much to lose from repeat customers upon whom they rely.

... the airport scam, now that's another matter... the marks are tourists who are unlikely repeat customers... and the Thai government IS the criminal class in Thailand, forget the Mafia... they'd steal the eyeballs out of a dead man.

Well, a place like Siam Paragon has many tourist customers who are not necessarily a repeat customer and I can not see why the situation would be any different than the duty free scam at the airport.

In addition, the fact that one wants to apply for a tax refund shows obviously that he/she is a tourist.

... Marc... the overwhelming preponderance of Siam Paragon's traffic are local customers, not tourists... if a scam as this got into the media, even Letters to the Editor, tourist AND Thai customers will simply stop shopping at Siam Paragon... the potential scrape off the top of this sort of scam is way, waaay right of the decimal point for a shopping mall operator.

... if a major mall operator has a mind to scam, they would do far better by jerking their tenants around... over-billing them for utilities, over-withholding on their percentage rents, over-charging them on common area maintenance expenses, or padding the shared marketing expenses budget (all of which the mall operator controls).

... I really think this is either the employee, or the retailer itself, but not the closely supervised shopping mall security.

Magnum,

I appreciate your point that this is probably not an organized large scale scam controlled by the mall operators. Nevertheless, I think tourists are in much more vulnerable position than Thais or expats in case something goes wrong. Obviously there is a potential risk for those who accept the offer and therefore people should be informed about it.

... agreed... with one not so minor exception... from the moment the pressure seal breaks and the cabin door is pushed back, tourists to Thailand are vulnerable.

... foreigners are reading a lot about Thailand over these last few of years and getting a real good view of what this country really is, behind all the the smiles.

... tourists exposure is not confined to retailers.
