Well some good info!
I'll visit Pantip and see how it goes,I have a few things In mind I wouldn't mind seeing if they have.
My plan wasalso to take a CD wallet, with a mixture of music, my own MP3's, some Photo CD's and blank ones thrown in for downloading from my digital camera. If customs have the time, they can sort through to find the pirated ones!

Xplurer, yes the customs may intercept the cd's when you mail them to your home address. I try to disguise the shipment by using plain envelopes (same as birthday cards) and I use some carton so you can't really feel what’s inside. If I buy expensive items like watches, rings, or a camera I mail all the evidence of the purchase to my home address, like Visa-slip, manuals, bills, test reports. Customs have to prove that you just bought the stuff. If they can't find anything they must believe that you already had it before you went on vacation.
Btw, I bought 7 DVDs. Two of them won’t play on my home DVD player. Cradle 2 the Grave is a problem, I can’t even access this DVD on my PC. Bruce Almighty is only accessible on my PC. Some DVDs are of poor quality, like a VCD (Hulk, Xmen2, Matrix R,) others are fine (They, Signs, Phone Booth). Don’t believe the information on the cover. It’s usually only the movie with a choice of subtitles. If you like a good laugh, turn on the English subtitles. I don’t know who comes up the translation but sometimes it’s hilarious.

Was in BKK in May - 1st time, only 1 stall on Pantip 3rd floor selling software cd's; all others closed down. First week of June, most stalls open, selling all - software, music, vcd, dvd, but would shut down when word of police came.
As described, look through books at cd covers for software, music, movies (vcd,dvd). Place your order, 20 minutes later, they show up. Obviously, no guarantees, but for a software or music cd, if you do have a computer, or use an internet shop, use the anti-virus program, (not for virus, set it to read all files, not just exe, and it will read each file so you can see if it is readable). If not, take back; if it's that day, or even next, most stalls will replace. I've had a few duds, but not many.
For software, most will come on plain cd, no marking. Can mix your own burned music cd's with others bought at Pantip, packing the covers separate. For vcd's and dvd's, unfortunately, most have artwork on the cd itself. One idea is to buy a small stack (10, or 25) of blank cd's - they come in a cylinder stack holder. Put the bought ones below, keep the top 1 or 2 blank. Take the blank ones, and put them in the plastic envelopes that the bought, burned ones came in; use them back home. Depending on your home country, if caught, could be big problems.

I've bought probably 100 software CD's and VCD's (not DVD's yet) over the last few years.
I've had maybe 10 duds, which considering the price paid I don't have a problem with. Of the duds some have been my own silly fault, like not looking closely and realising that "Thank you, but I didn;t actually want the Thai version of Windows!"
As for the trick with the stack of CD's ... yup, I am sure it would work alomst every time....
The thing is, as you say, big trouble if you get caught! If customs think you are trying to deliberately away with something they will come down on you like a ton of bricks, and check every fine detail of your luggage for other problems. If they decide to charge you with something (talking in general here) you won't get off with "oops, I didn't know that was illegal" if you have made ANY attempt to hide it.
Far better I think to take the risk, after all they do not inspect most bags, and if caught go "Oops ....."

xplurer: good advice about not trying to hide and use the ignorance excuse. For me, biggest thing is taking the tell-tale paper covers out of the cd envelopes and packing them elsewhere (like with all your receipts).

I have heard that Fortune Mall on Ratchada is the up-and-coming computer mall (supposedly better than Pantip Plaza). Has anyone been there? If so, what is the exact location?

Been there (Fortune) several times. Not "better than" or up and coming but more like a 1/2 or 1/3 size version. They have a Mac store and many software sellers as well as plenty of harware but 1/2 the floors Pahtip does. I like the mall for location and the other stores it offers, such as high-end audio file eqpt. (new and used), eyewear, cell phones, gold, Tesco, even a bowling alley in the basement. AND anchored to a very good value hotel going by the same name.

Update Pantip (about yesterday)
Major software dealer shops have been closed down, but there's still a lot of software at side booths (Ground Level) and on the second floor (in the back of the restaurant area).
DVD also available a plenty ...
You may try Hollywood Street, a few hundred meter towards Phayathai Road.
Official price per CD 100 baht, but the woman in the back is selling 80 baht if you ask nicely ....

I was at Panthip today...
All the SW/DVD/CD shops are closed or covered over. I'm told they're all in hiding till after APEC is over...
Cops and soldier boys are "patrolling" all over the place...
If you wander around enough some of the more enterprising chaps will approach you... warning: know what you want in advance... preferably written down (if SW include a version number) so you can show them... you probably won't have any opportunity to browse...
