To each his own, but I know if I had been arrested with a bogus ID, the cops would be the LEAST of my worries... It would be the homecoming welcome that would be on my mind...

Considering the nature of this forum, I'm truly astonished by the censorious nature of some of these replys.
I guess all you good church going folks have never come into contact with a real life teenager that wasn't considering a life in the priesthood.
I'd hoped for a simple answer & I had never considered getting lectures on morals.
The kid is a good one, all things considered. I like most other fathers regard myself as flawed.
I had hopes that users of this forum would also know their own limits & imagine themselves back at that point in their lives.
It depresses me that I got more sensible & less judgmental opinions from the Lonely Planet forum.
To the people who have replied to be helpful, thanks. To the others who have decided to pass their form of judgment, I would suggest they take a long look in the mirror.

Yes, we understand that your kid has the normal kind of teenage urges to drink before the legal age. We completely agree that your kid is a good one, and that it is you who is seriously flawed, not your kid. Sorry if there was any misunderstanding.

When we were at that age, we were probably just like your son, but our parents were wise enough not to condone any such illicit actions. Children actually don't like it when parents are permissive, especially when it means breaking the law. They may drink anyway, but they will loose respect for you as a person if you condone and even help perpetuate their illegal behavior, and that will lead to much worse consequences down the road in your relationship with them.

I just read in the news that a freshman quarterback on the University of Georgia football team, who was previously arrested for underage possession of alcohol and two counts of possession of false identification, has now been kicked off the team and has lost his college scholarship.
When an adult is charged in aiding or abetting underage drinking in the US, they usually face felony criminal charges, and may face jail time.
People in the US take underage drinking pretty seriously, primarily because about 15,000 people die every year in the US in alcohol related auto accidents, and many of the deaths are innocent victims in the other car(s). The number of serious injuries is also very high.
Perhaps this is not such a big problem in countries with mass transportation, and where most teenagers do not drive cars.

... awww, LarryO, don't go getting all depressed on us now... unlike Lonely Planet, this forum is more of an after-hours boarding school bull session, with someone on-watch for the dorm master... no gurls allowed... and the smoking light was 'on'.

... but if you go elsewhere, you will be depriving yourself of the cajoling and spirited banter that does get pretty darn amusing at times.
... we live in a judgemental world... all of us... everyday we have to defend our decisions, personal and professional... jump in, man... if you can't defend it... well... you ponder that.
... be sure that some of the opinions here are pretty flakey... but some are from guys who have been there and gotten their noses busted... it's an unpleasant experience and you really hate to see other guys get their noses busted if they can avoid it.
... so... here it is... after which I will let it be... adolescents do not see the wolrd as clearly as adults... myopic judgement... we all had it... and yeah, we did all that shit you are talking about doing with your son... anyone who didn't is missing something fundamental in their life.
... the difference is that few did it with their father's blessings... we did wrong and we KNEW that we were doing wrong... that unambiguous judgement our fathers (who did the same things we did when they were young) held over our heads helped narrow the focus to our still developing, hair-brained judgements.
... without a consistent True North bearing, a kid might be slow to learn judgements about good and evil, right and wrong, high risk and low risk behavior, high cost and low cost of failure, bit tits or little tits, and on, and on, and on.
... boys become the men we make them, and a big part of that is helping them develop judgement... while I suppose there are exceptions, you really don't have to look too awfully far to see why a kid becomes a great kid, or not so great a kid, or worse.
... so, don't let us drive you crazy... if 5-years from now no one will remember whatever it is you guys decide to do, it is probably not worth getting worked-up over.
... hey... I am past it already.

Student caught selling fake CDs

The Thon Buri Court yesterday sentenced a second-year female student to a two-year suspended jail term for selling second-hand CDs on Bangkok's Rama II Road.
Sudawadi Komonwit, 25, was arrested at the same time as another second-hand-CD vendor Somchai Nanthawanit - who was jailed because he couldn't pay the Bt100,000 fine until Pol General Pongsapat Pongcharoen covered the fine and got him released.
Sudawadi's parents have also asked for Pongsapat's help. The court found the defendant guilty of selling copyrighted CDs without permission. But since she had no previous criminal record, her family is poor and she is a student with no income, the court gave her a suspended jail term, promising to keep her record clean if she reports to police as required.
