whereas the newer 4 wheel versions seem to handle better.
Haven't really seen them, but I always wonder if those 4 wheels, exposed, would be more prone to damage?

I can confirm the Luggage Repair shop on Soi 55 is open. I was quoted "a week" to fix a stuck wheel on a carry-on. However, by the time I actually got there, I didn't have a week, and even if I did, I was worried they were talking "Thai time". But a possibility - no idea about the quality, but would assume labor should be pretty cheap.

Some interesting info on this PDF file if you want to learn more about how and where to hide stuff (be it at home or during travels).

As I was the OP I'll give you an update about my suitcase enquiry.
I decided to give the Samsonite a miss, in the UK the models I was interested in were about £165.
After doing some surfing I saw that Carlton suitcases had a good recommendation, so I have bought the Carlton Multidrive spinner.
The wheels are semi recessed, it has a TSA lock for the USA, 3 clamps including a 3 digit number one, several interior sections and a fully receeding two support handle.
I bought it off e-bay and I am very happy with the purchase, the main thing is that I am still happy after the baggage handlers at LHR and BKK have done with it.

I bought a Samsonite duffel travelling bag about 5-6 years ago from a bag shop on Sukhumvit Road, between Soi 5 and Soi 7. I can't say if it was original or a fantastically good-as-original fake Samsonite. The finish was excellent inside and outisde, with thick lining, tough handles, stitching and thick nylon zippers. It has no wheels though but is a spacious flexible bag that has served me well all these years. I paid 650 baht for it !

Following on this successful purchase, around two years back I purchased another Samsonite cabin strolly from MBK for 1500 baht. Same quality -- and performance -- as the earlier one. Now and then I amuse myself wondering if these are originals or fantastic fakes.
